How to use the second action bar?

When I press CTRL, I see a second action bar and can place items/spells in it. However, I can't actually do anything with items in the bar. Items will not go into the environment from this bar. It sure would be nice to have some extra space to work with; is there some way to make use of the second action bar?

The pinned FAQ has the available controls listed. As far as I can remember cntl is used to either send all dwarves to eat cntl & E or to sleep cntl & R.

Hmm. Thanks, I looked in the FAQ but all it says is:
"CNTRL key toggles the secondary quick bar."

Which is what I already discovered. I see the secondary action bar and can place items into it, it's just that it's utterly useless. Has anyone else been able to make use of it?

Hold ctrl, click what you want to use, then let go of ctrl. The bar dose'nt toggle. It don't work very well if your putting out say rr tracks because you can't see how many you got left.

It took me a bit to even realize there WAS a second quickbar. I wish there was a third now. I use the second one for stuff I will use throughout a map but not necessarily regularly, like the "pick up everything" spell and the "explode" spell. Now that I think about it, I put most of the spells except the portal on the second bar.
