As you say, i experienced the same:
they seem not to stop anything if more than one enemy near, so pretty useless for a wave. But strangely the cages seem to hold goblins.
Also useless for me: the traps - they simply disappear and don't do anything remarkeable.
I use fences (slow down, obviously works) & spikes (hurts & stops, can get destroyed, but cheap to replace) or later also steel-doors ( place 3 or 4 on top of each other so the enemies don't jump over them) - stops them forever if you got a good defense above in the air
Wood traps work 3 times then dissappear, iron traps work 4 times then dissappear and do a little bit more damage.
Cages are worthless, except near your arrow tower. It will hold just 1 creature and the arrows will eventually kill it.
lol, i have like 999 zombie-brains & 999 bones. that's why my traps just seem to disappear over night :D
You can place traps in front of trees - animals run across them on their own - no need to chase.
Guess i should have placed them starting at the very rim of the map where it's less likely that zombies walk along than in the maps center
