Cages not working (feature/bug)
My cages only hold the nightly spawning zombies, all the monsters spawning from the portals just happily walk straight past them, skeletons and zombies alike. Does this work as intended or is there a trick to make them work?

each cage can only hold one enemy. That's the intention.
As you say, i experienced the same:
they seem not to stop anything if more than one enemy near, so pretty useless for a wave. But strangely the cages seem to hold goblins.
Also useless for me: the traps - they simply disappear and don't do anything remarkeable.

I use fences (slow down, obviously works) & spikes (hurts & stops, can get destroyed, but cheap to replace) or later also steel-doors ( place 3 or 4 on top of each other so the enemies don't jump over them) - stops them forever if you got a good defense above in the air

Traps are great to do your hunting. I use them to hunt exclusively in an area. I open a portal somewhere and strip mine the trees. I put about 10 traps down and then later when its time to strip mine the trees again all you ahve to do is collect he meat and eggs and leather. Saves time by not having to watch the dwarves chase a achicken 1/2 way across the map.

Wood traps work 3 times then dissappear, iron traps work 4 times then dissappear and do a little bit more damage.

Cages are worthless, except near your arrow tower. It will hold just 1 creature and the arrows will eventually kill it.

I prefer fences for slowing down the waves. Which have the added advantage that the dwarves do not get stuck in them. Unlike the cages.

I mean for chickens and meat - dont chase the birdies around - thats annoying and time consuming

You can place traps in front of trees - animals run across them on their own - no need to chase.

i know the intention but does not work here: only zombies seem to trigger these traps - i never caught some animal - i placed 25 iron traps i got from goblins camp after i read your post yesterday- not any single boar, sheep or chicken went into - and all traps are gone now.
Guess i should have placed them starting at the very rim of the map where it's less likely that zombies walk along than in the maps center
