do monster portals get closer and closer to your start position as you progress?
I built a pretty badass castle.. cept now the 2 portals that spawn monsters are spawning on top of it instead of next to me.... kinda lame that all my defenses and traps are now going to waste.

Usually stay 10 or more blocks away from edge of your base. It never gets closer and original gate opening.

Side to side my shelter, including the walls defenses, are at most 35ish blocks. I have never had a portal open on top of one. The closest they have come is just under 10 blocks away. How wide is your castle?
Its not THAT wide..... also how do you win a map? Im completely out of iron and coal. can you break down stuff by chance?

Yes, you can break most things down although I am surprised you are out of iron and coal. There are probably more veins, you just need to keep mining. Also, iron will drop randomly as you mine the lower levels.

If you are in campaign mode you need to build the portal to move on to the next world. There is no real win condition for custom mode. Check out the pinned FAQ for more info. Or search the forum, the recycle question comes up a lot. I do wish the devs would put that little tidbit into the tutorial.
Yea... Ive gone all the way down to the mithril mines and Im completely out of Iron and coal.... Forging full weapons and armor for 15 dwarfs is expensive as HELL

i had portals next to my door already - in the adjacent block, as well as on my "roof".

I even had portals at the rim of the ocean - still very close to the entrance of my (in that game) veeeery wide house.
I think it's possible to force the red portal-spawn points away from the stockpile using totems -
on one side of the house the horizontal limit is at Grunts shop - but on the other side of the house you can push/force portal positions almost to the edge of the ocean. However if you place a row of "hovering" stones/bricks, front & backwall in the air above the shop then the portals open mostly up there and the mobs are busy half the night digging through the stones to eventually drop onto the ground and then are unable to return back to their portal when is dawn- it increases your chance to get 'em all ...

My snow world campaign had Grunt's Shop completely enclosed in my shelter and pushed the portal spawn on that side well away, so you can probably push out just as far on that side. I'm just glad that the multi-totem interactions work better than they used to.
so multiple totems push the spawns away? do they have to be linked or can they be seperate? Basically i have a castle with a multi-tiered giant underground dwarf cavern system nad i could expand the top castle for more totems to be linked if needed

edit: thats actually a load of crap, Just tested it.... the enemy portals spawned RIGHT on top of a totem while its "activated" in a house. I litterally mean RIGHT on top of it.

@Warsmith. As I've heard and experienced myself, having totems share area of aura, mess things up. Say one totem have bad comfort and one are good. Then you place one of them closer to the other, they keep changing their comfort value with ca 3-5 seconds time frame. Annoying!
As for now just keep em separate and I do guess the monster portals are ca 10 blocks from any aura zone. If not.. well IM not so sure A glitch, a bug?

Monsters spawning right in the comfort zone would crush any land rulers dream :P

Definitely glitch/bug if the portal is opening on top of an active totem. Snow world I had my fortress divided so there was a 3 block solid wall with multiple doors between Totems to keep them separated from one another, Only time I had problems was when I messed something up and the totems interfered with each other, or just messed something up and invalidated a shelter.

With regard to totems sharing aura, I've actually gotten that to work properly this last week, I had to build them separated, join them up, and then break and refresh the shelter. They are still very wonky in general 'thou.
