Fear on the other hand ... Dwarves not only run past open portals, but also jump to their death while fleeing or simply "stand" there waiting to get killed. *sigh*
I suggested like a dozen times already to replace them with belt-manlifts - or if not replace then add some new technology which allows to build some. Belt-manlifts (or paternoster-lifts) could be extended with additional resources - maybe like build 4 blocks depth with some ropes, chairs and 2 wheels and extend it with additional chairs and ropes to maybe a maximum depth of 20 or 30 blocks.
It can be expensive to build them since they are better (faster) than the normal elevators and might need a higher technology - i guess all players will try to replace their 1-cabin elevators as soon as possible...

Since the new patch I have lots of dwaves in my shelter, standin right on the portal that can't find the way to the other end of the portal that is right on top of the working area... Takes them like 10 to 60 seconds to find it...
And this dwarf... He has an elevator, a relatively nearby portal and a flat area to walk to the tiles. Why does he need like a minute to find the path? In fact, all dwarves did that on that spot.

This game's AI and pathfinding, or in fact the engine it self probably, are total garbage. I expected them to have all serious issue fixed like half a year later. But all I see are a few minor bugfixes, improved GUI and faster loading times. Still memory leaks, impossible to tunnel, complex shelters are impossible, enemy waves spawning on the roof of my shelter, zombies attacking the walls instead of the doors, and 50+ other bugs including crashes and ones that stop your entire game.
Or I accidentally click a snail when attempting to remove a scaffolding. The dwarves that are climbing REALLY long ladders then drop all their cargo and like half my dwarves come to attack a random snail somewhere far away... And then they have to go back and pick up all the items they dropped randomly... The pathfinding and the AI, ALL OF IT are a huge mess.
That said, it is really sad to see that things like the elevator bug are STILL there. I think this was "fixed" according to the patch notes at least once [tho I'd swear I've seen it on several] so guess not so much.
Aside from the long-standing bugs [some have been fixed, but not many] there's been pretty much zero content addition to the game in a very, very long time.
Bit of limbo. It's a good game but I hate to see it get hamstrung by stupid bugs.
Elevators are stil wacky I agree, along with rails. Both need some improvement. If a dwarf gets hit, it should break the waiting cycle so he can retaliate to whatever hit him instead of stuck in waiting and die.
Sadly dwarves get stuck 1 tile in front of a portal (can't find portal), get stuck in my shelter, get stuck on elevators, get stuck randomly just about ANYWHERE and I'm getting tired of it. Especially lategame dwarves get stuck in the easiest positions possible and I have to use manual control to move them like 1 tile so they start moving again.
Like that video that I posted... I mean... come on... door/hatch placements can bug dwarves and zombies alike and there are many other things that can bug them and I expected them (even for a beta) to fix at least the memory leaks and the basic pathing issues in 6 months time...
