The sad part is that the AI glitch much when I manual mine. One block of coal mined, 3-4 dwarfs came to pick the loot, leaving 3 spare dwarfs deep down. Usually my heart gets broken seeing that and then alt+f4 xD
I agree that dwarves tend to prioritize picking up resources so I find it's usually best to get all your dwarves on the same task as much as possible (all cutting wood in same area, all mining same area). Downside is they share exp but upside is efficiency!
Yes you can totally mine the back layer! I'm fairly sure I've seen gold in the back which means you're getting 2 gold ore from 1 block technically! What a deal! :D
