The "no-wool-growing-disease" seems to happen quite often,(in 1 of 20 games) the devs might notice this because it's very annoying having to play 5 to 6 hours until can build a farm and then to recognize: "all i can do now is abandon this savegame because the sheep are bugged and don't grow wool in this game."
But at around 18 hours to current playtime the iron for me in that word is pretty much gone with the exception of deposits that are only 1 or 2 chunks in size and I think I've found all of them all ready. So I'm kind of struggling at the moment in trying to get enough iron for the constructions I need and to craft the specified things in the research tree in order to get the stronger stuff needed to fight the guardians.
Some players have run into issues with missing guardians. But sometimes the guardians are in very tiny rooms and can be hard to spot. The locator spell is very useful when you find yourself in this situation. It is an expensive spell though so you are better off using it on the bigger maps, when you only have a couple to find, or you are not sure if they exist.
Can you post a screenshot of your map? This will give me a better idea how much you have explored the map, and how systematic you have been with your digging.
Edit: PS, personally I would rather see old, relevant posts revived than have a whole bunch of different threads on the same topic. So post away :)

Some areas I refilled because I didn't like the way they looked. Terraformed surface areas to allow more animal spawns. But as you can see I more or less have no more iron as I assume the only remaining clusters in those undiscovered bottom layers would be high tier.
How much more iron do you need, and what is it for? I admit I do try to keep my iron consumption to a minimum. Not all gear needs to be upgraded, and I try to skip levels of upgrades as much as I can. For instance, only a couple of dwarves get better axes, and the ranged fighters stay mostly in leather goods. Everyone gets the best pickaxes, but not all at once. If I have to craft stuff to get through the tech tree that I do not want I recycle it right away. You can get a fair bit of crafting materials back from recycling.
I think I have enough items currently in queue to be made in order to finish those two stages. But looking ahead I'm concerned I might not have enough iron to carry me through as my stock is only 5.
Other than the suggestions I have already given (recycling, looking at the larger dark areas, mining lower level blocks), plus buying iron if you can get the coin, I am not sure there is much else you can do with this world. You might have to start over if the iron situation is really that bad.
I was fearing that might be the case. I know I can cut the intial play time down now that I know more of the game but I don't think it would be that much.
I'll have to give your suggestions a go and try to farm creatures for weapon drops when I can as I think they recycle iron.
It's just some of those waves are insane even with the aid of 2 wooden towers supported with a variety of traps. Example being 1 berserker, 2 beholders, 2 zombie flingers or similar situations.
Anyhow cheers for the aid. It helped in trying to understand the game more.
Good luck!
