Underground Shelter Issues
Just started playing the game today and I am having some problems with my underground shelter. So I build a ladder down and I make rooms on the left and right of this ladder. At the very top is a hatch and I place my totem in one of the rooms.

Here is the issue, the side I play my totem at is the only side recognized as a shelter. So if I place is on the left of the ladder, all the rooms on the left with be a shelter but the rights ones will not be and vice versa. I simply cannot figure out why this is. The little tracing line for shelters just doesnt go to the other side. Tried this in multiple restarts.

Might have to do with doors. Or wait till you get more totems.

I was wondering if Hatred had a door between the two sides. That was the only obvious thing I could think of that would cause a switch like that. A picture would definitely help.

I stopped using doors awhile ago because when I would use a door it would only cover the single room.

I will try to get a picture. Have not taken a screen shot in awhile and I certainly have never posted one to steam.

Since I post pictures infrequently I always have to look up how to do it, especially for the Mac since the preassigned keys for the Steam command keys do not work with OSX. At least not without remapping. Some folks post to dropbox, google drive, etc., and provide a link.

Isn't there somthing about multiple entrances? Try a second hatch.

Oh, and stagger the ladder, if a dwarf goes all combat-y they will drop what they are carrying. Which then makes for a long and time consuming climb to recover it later.

I've never seen this.. the only thing I've seen is like if your shelter is really big then adding a second totem is necessary because the stars take a short-cut ignoring part of your base in there loop. Hope you get it resolved! Is it like this for every world you start or do you just have a bugged map?

Its like this for every world I start so its something I am doing wrong. I will have a picture up hopefully tonight. I have been super busy the last few days and really have not played at all.

Will take a look after you post. I am curious about what is going wrong.

You can see the little stars literally cutting through the second room (on the right) at the front.

The main issue that you are having is that the totem is way over in the top left corner. Placing the totem closer to the center of where you want your shelter to be should take care of most of your problems. You may still lose a bit of shelter, but you can adjust your walls once you see how the boundaries are being drawn.

You should move the totem to the center of your home, or have one on the left and one on the right, serperated from each other by a goodly ways. Putting 'em next to each other isn't a good idea.

Ha! Just barely beat you on that advice. drochnathair is right, if you want to make a larger shelter the totems should not be too near each other. Boundaries are determined based on the distance from the totem. Separate any totems if you want to expand your shelter boundaries, either east and west (wider), or north and south (taller).
