the waves are easy. Once you start building, make some walls 4 or 5 blocks deep and also hi. As time goes on after each wave up grade the blocks the monsters destroyed with an upgraded version. Once I got red brickwalls, I dont pay attention to the waves any more. 6 layers deep and 12 layers hi. By time they get through, the suns up and they melt. Do get some XP tho or you will be leveling forever.
Walling off the shelter from Waves is a good way to survive, but it's a terrible way to level...
You get a MASSIVE exp bonus from killing an entire wave before sunrise, more than the total of each individual monster. The bonus gets bigger each wave (as does the difficulty)
Me, personally, I try to make the path from graveyards and portals to my front door as easy as possible for the monsters, to maximize the number of monsters I can kill in the shortest amount of time. Just don't forget to make use of traps and cages once they're near your shelter... every little bit counts when trying to kill monsters.
But, unless there's an achievment for lvl 20 itself (is there? I haven't looked...) there's not much need to actually get level 20. And ideally, you'll be finished with a world long before you hit that point anyways. If you play naturally, you'll most likely finish a world sometime between lvl 13 and lvl 15... you have to intentionally stall progression to hit max level before advancing to the next world, I think. Hitting 20 doesn't happen naturally.
I'll have to do some more playing around before i do story mode... thanks..
Today I have reached lvl13 and 13th dwarf appeared in portal.
On my previous save, desert world, I have reached lvl14 (Piramids exploration takes some time :P), and I also had 14 dwarves.
Please check out my screenshoot. On the left you can see number of dwarves and on the right lvl. Screenshoot is spoil free

Oh man, you really are doing it the hard way.... story mode is the way to go to learn the game....
yeah they said that about me alot growing up.. but as i'm a stay at home dad and have many hours of the day idle i can do it..
But i'm actually working on the story mode... just stuck with mithril gear.. theres no ore left on the small map and i dont seem to be getting much coin from the waves... maybe i shoul have left the skeleton tombstones... ah well...
Sure you get a wave clear bonus but at what cost? At some point its not worth it anymore so I will just clear out the ones that make it through my walls. In beginning this is great to do but later its not so easy without getting creamed.
i've had a night spawn, skelys from graveyards on both sides as well as those damn little goblin camp spawning and attacking... wiped my whole clan...
What im looking for is a confirmed way to get coins...
1. digging.. ( ive found a few0
2. goblin camps.
3. underground encounters..
4. boss waves..
so i guess its just stick it out with my current map as i have good defense going.. nothing gets through... and they can send what they want as i have a great defense..
i started with a sand wall till i got established... then switched over to a 3 block tall wooden bridge with arrow shooters and 3 stack tesla towers.. =)_
so now im just re decorating...
(I'm replaying Story mode, since I took a long hiatus from the game).
Anyway, I would just advise that you move to the next map. It really isn't worth your time to dig for coins.
Coins, BTW, can be found when digging (even non-mineral) blocks. They also sometimes drop when you chop trees. (... these, in addition to the ones you've listed).
TBH, it's not worth it to farm coins, especially since they have such a miniscule chance to drop. At the end of the first map, I finished the game with 80 coins -- and hadn't spent a single one in the shop. That will buy you 8 bars of mithral.... maybe enough to make two chest pieces of armor? And that's after digging up 50% of ALL blocks, and spending about 10 hours in game.
Go to a larger map where there are more mithral deposits.... :-)
