How do you open Pandora's box?

I've tried twice now, the only option I see is to dig it, which just destroys it. I don't see any kind of 'open' option.

You just dig It, then whatever you get from It will appear.

So are they sometimes empty? Because I've dug two and on both occasions the chest said 'What a waste' and it just disappeared and nothing came out.

Sounds like you might have just gotten unlucky. Sometimes they'll spawn things that don't work in the current level, like melting ice on desert world and the like, or giving you max mana when you already have it. I think that's the message you get when that happens as well as if it's not going to give you anything.

Pandora's box has random effects when you open it. There's not necessarily stuff inside it, but it often has temporary boosts or nerfs. Look for a message on the screen when you break it.

got an good event where the dwarves that mined got good minerals for a few minutes...randomiser picked the only dwarf with no mining skill ; still gave him a pickax and manually guided him through to make a tunnel through dirt squares :)))
most of the time I just leave it alone since earthquakes destroyed my work/lounge area, had to rebuild all the stuff :))
BTW : qucik answer you'll get an option if u click on it just like with the shop, trap door etc
