Does anyone know how close the compass has to be for it to be effective?
Nothing like burning through a bunch of mana without a good result. Back to strip mining to find the last guardian. It's going to be a long time before I can spam the compass spell again.
8 blocks in between allows you to see EVERY block. There are no permanent dark areas.
Finding all guardians can be tricky on large levels, especially since they can hide in a really tiny cave (you wouldn't believe how a seemingly insignificant tiny diagonal area that you haven't discovered suddenly turns out to be a guardian's hiding place).
The compass spell doesn't seem to have a range. It can be used anywhere, even on the surface, although obviously it's more convenient to use it deep undeground for more precise results. Basically, the compass takes something like a second to appear and then spins roughly 5 seconds more, pointing in the direction of a hidden room.
So either it's that the spell is bugged on Mac or maybe there's some other bug involved and your last guardian didn't spawn.
The silver lining is that the compass spell is not all that useful anyway. Its mana cost is unsustainable at the end game (where you actually start to actively look for guardians) and it makes little sense to use it since it shows you rooms, not guardians. A large world can have tons of rooms (waaaay over 5, maybe close to 10), so your best best is exploring the level anyway.
It is certainly possible that this behavior is a mac issue, I have already run into a number of these. But I was wondering if anyone had systematically tried to use the compass spell and come up with any parameters for when it does (not) work. Especially as it does make sense to use the compass spell to find guardians because guardians are in hidden rooms. I have no problem finding additional rooms, I am just trying to narrow the search so that I do not have to spend hours looking for that last guardian.
I have also found guardians in teeny/tiny places, and guardians with multiple portal pieces. I even had a guardian leap up to the surface - got a picture of that one if you want to take a look. So far I have never had any trouble finding all of the guardians and building a portal. I assume the guardian is still lurking in there somewhere, although there is a small chance that I finally encountered a portal bug. But it would be nice to be able to use an existing, and really expensive, spell for its purpose, finding rooms. And so far it is not working, or I have found all the hidden rooms. The first outcome suggests I should keep digging, the second that I should cut my losses and give up.
