You can not start to build huge castles instantly.
But a few tips for huge overground-castles:
Have the stockpile close to the door to keep the ways short if you carry stuff from ouside in. Good planning helps.
If your house becomes wide, place another stockpile close to the other door. I always check for the goblin-store which mostly is very close to my first base. So I build into the other direction and finally connect both stockpiles with some rail in the basement of the house.
Place crafting stations on bridges above the stockpile-floor so the crafted stuff gets collected really fast because it drops down to the rail or close to stockpiles.
And don't build elevators in your house- you would regret it.
PS. You can find a lot of my castles (often total-views) in screenshots in my profile.
there were just plenty of problems that all added up back then. Apparently though most of them have been rectified or eased quite a bit. The waiting time being a heck of a lot better due to max height the elevator goes up/down.
So it is nice to see they have gotten lots of improvements. :)
Only base I use on all levels and difficulties... First thing you should buy with your gold is an elevator, this will allow you to avoid the waves entirely until you get your other defensive items going...
