Desert World lots of problems.
First off the tornadoes come way to frequently. i am playing on very hard setting. if i set it to lower difficulty will this slow down the tornado spawn rate?
Sand Sand makes the prospect of making an underground shelter more complicated. you really have to go a bit deeper than the sand layer to have a decent shaped home. and it seems any block i place up on the surface will get blown away next tornado. but not the blocks that were there originally.

Tornado sucks this way. Would be enough if it would spread the resoucres that lay around but not the ones from stockpile also
- I just needed 4 attempts (same game) to have the resources for one pickaxe in stock at the same moment so I could craft one - my dwarves just had the blown-away wood on their backpacks to bring it back when the next sandstorm blew the stones of my storage:(

No tornados/no rain/no snow the very first day!

I'll return to the first world for the meantime...(second world the giant worm kills the fun)

Add switch for custom game to turn these off!

Your first priority in desert world is to build A stone covering over your home area. just need a layer of stone over where you have the stockpile and shelter area. stone = tornado proof.

I know- but to get these stones faster i need a pickaxe... but i can not craft a pickaxe if the tornado blows the wood out of my stockpile, my dwarf collects it and meanwhile the next tornado blows the stones (!) out of my stock. It just slows everything down because dwarves have to collect the same stuff over and over again and there's no weapon against that evil tornado (same as the giant worm- it just appears and destroys) which kind of kills the fun. If that would happen once in a while...ok, but this?!

i think thats the challenge of the desert world. :-)

the challenge is completely gone after you have stone over your shelter. so sad the game gets boring after that.

I was hoping the challenge would be to deal with water+wood shortage and fight off mummies. This is just like have luck and two minutes without a tornado to get one step forward...no fun :(

I had several tornados . its only a minor inconvenience.
what you should do is make more use of the reset button when first starting a game...
I restarted the board several times until i had the ideal conditions near my home.
those conditions are...
Palm trees.
cactus.
Stone.... alot of stone
and i always restart untill the world generates me a large stone mountain. so i can mine the whole thing
what probably happened to you is that one of these key resources was not nearby and you had to walk to it.

RAIN SPELL
The rain spell was sending tornadoes for me. I hope that's not the intention.

FLOATING ANIMALS
Fix the floating animals - either let them swim or have them drown. It seems impossible at times to hunt them when they're floating. (They're in the water because tornadoes fling them there).

If there is not much stone on the surface hunt for it underground. "rerolling" is wimpy.

yea so is crying about not being able to mine stone.
ReneMiner Mar 1, 2014 @ 2:10am
oh I'm just crying about the progress of the game: it started out very well with the first world which is still my favourite. Second world is more interesting because of no water on surface- but the giant worm always messes my game up.
And now this? Did they run out of good ideas? Keep player busy collecting the same stuff over and over again and send another tornado as soon as he's done recollecting?

Also - got the stone-cover above the stockpile done, no backwall yet - but now my dwarves flee off two tornados at once when they are under the cover...

Stockpile messed up because just that moment I wanted to replace the sand with stone - tornados beat my dwarves through the house: Game over.

Initial stockpile should always be placed on stones on map-generation!

I agree this is a problem. I have had dwarves run OUT of the house only to get swept up by a tornado.

They deffinatley flee way too much . or too soon.
Cooper Mar 1, 2014 @ 5:00pm
The desert world does need some work on the mechanics, the dwarves should know when they are safe from a tornado. As well they shouldn't turn and run away from saftey just cause they see a tornado. I had one guy right next to the entrence of the house and he turned and ran in the opposite direction rather than run into the house where it was safe.
RonEmpire Mar 2, 2014 @ 12:48am
there are alot of other broken mechanics in the game.

like dwarves picking up crafted items and not putting it into the stockpile but walking all over the map with it until he's 'full' and then comes back.

rather annoying that i'm having to wait for a missing item to get returned to the stockpile when it was dropped right next to the stockpile.
ReneMiner Mar 2, 2014 @ 3:35am
if the dwarves get attacked now - they drop those items far from base and never return there later to collect these. Especially annoying if they were carrying your door, drop it somewhere and it gets blown into the ocean by the next tornado...

If you see some dwarf picking up something and wants to walk away with it: instantly take over control and move him in front of stockpile!
