digging right down. way too anoying
ok this is getting to be almost unplayable. after every wave i end up fixxing bigger and bigger holes in the ground ( they dig 6 or 7 blocks down into my mining tunnles thoguht stone and dirt)
as well as holes in my shelter ( they will dig thoguht 3-5 blocks of stone to get inside my shelter) when my wooden hatches are only 7 blocks straight ahead . i spend half the time repairing all the holes rather then being able to craft and dig down to get to the portals

dont worry it gets easier but keep in mind the baddies will take the shortest route to your base you can not maze them i found this a problem myself i build a sky fortress 1 entrance down at the bottem they simply made huge towers with them selves and came in the sides also recomend working for the wooden tower asap and to have your dwaves near the home come the invasion rdy to defend

i noticed that by my problem was that they would did thoguht 7 blocks of dirt rahter then walk and jump up the 4 'stairs' to the wooden hatch

ive also noticed that they would attack and distroy the ston blocks that the stairs start at rather then jumping up onto it as well

I have been building my shelter underground. I make it about 15 blocks wide and dig down as far as I need for beds and crafting equipment. At ground level I build sand walls 4 blocks high and three blocks wide on the outside of my shelter. Ground level will be like this: 3 blocks of sand <--15 blocks of dirt (with a hatch in there somewhere) --> 3 blocks of sand. I use the portal spell to get outside the sand walls until I can craft steel doors. When mining I make sure not build any horizontal tunnels that are closer to ground level than 10 blocks. If I mine anywhere under my walls I make sure to fill in the mining holes before the next wave.

With this setup the monsters only bash at the sand walls and then get crushed when the sand falls on their heads. Monster waves do not dig down to my shelter since I am careful to make sure the shelter lines stay between the sand walls. Usually I will have to repair the sand wall after a monster wave.

Once I get steel doors I replace the sand walls and put in defenses that allow me to fight the waves while the monsters attack the doors. This is an excellent way to get experience points.
