Need tips on building a shelter above ground.

Hi! I've played this game for dozens of hours, but I always build underground shelters because they're so easy to set up and close with a hatch. Now I'm hoping to build an actual house or castle. Any tips on how to close all sides? I know I'll need a door. It's just that I'm confused by the angle (viewing the shelter from the front with no way to see all 4 sides). One time I built around my dwarves and they had to destroy walls to get out. I play the game in sandbox or easy campaign because the constant attacks drive me nuts. I'm mostly interested in building and crafting. Thanks in advance for any help. :-)

You're going to have to build up and out, obviously you know that.

If you're building up you're going to have to use ladders or something.
Either way, you can use dirt, wood walls, stone walls, etc etc.
You need to place a block on the background, then another on top to make a wall or roof.
Also when using the wood or stone wall blocks, if you click on it again with the block selected you can change the shape for estethics.
