What is strip mining?

I see a lot of forum posts where people talk about strip mining. Can somebody explain to me what exactly that is and how to do it?

Strip mining is when you remove everything..... instead of digging tunnels, you just start at the top, and take everything out.... dirt, rock, ore, etc.

yep and use elevators ga'lore with warehouse just for faster strip mining, unfortunately atm if you try to build a bunch of lights down as you go to keep things lit up they will only make half of them and take them about an hour and a half :). Dwarfs are bugged atm at building but doing a good job at stripmining at least. Why strip mine? Well, generates money and few resources without the viens and because you can. :) Mainly because you can.
