New Crops Question

I have been growing crops underground on a custom map in the forest biome.

I have carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes and wheat.

I just realized we now have harvested a boatload of everything BUT Potatoes.

Even the cucumber plants are withered because I guess they've reached their limit.

Do the Potatoes take extremely long time to grow?

Or cannot be grown underground?

Potatoes are the same time as carrots for me in my map, snow with under ground farm, just click on them and if it doesn't give the "not ready for harvest" message then let them dig. For me the wheat is bugged now, mill wheat gives 1 seed, 1 seed gives 1 wheat.

Yeah it said "not ready for harvest" so I dug them out and replanted.

It should have grown by now. But are there even recipes for potatoes?

I'd rather concentrate on wheat, since it's good for beer.

I have about 400 cucumbers and tomatoes now. But only about 12 carrots. So i replaced the withered cucumber plants with carrots for now.

Potatoes over leaves does baked potatoes and i'm sure there are some others but I haven't found them yet. Oh center(middle) p and center(bottom) l.

Potatoes grow fine underground I think they take about the same time as wheat, but yeah you have to wait until it stops saying 'not ready for harvest', or get used to what the fully grown potatoes look like. :)

This confused me at first too -- I had boat loads of tomatoes and cucumbers and no carrots or potatoes. You have to harvest them the same way you do wheat. When they are ready, you can see the tops of the veggies sticking out of the soil (brown for potatoes, orange for carrots -- carrots are easier to see, but if you plant them at the same time they should be ready at the same time too).

just returned to this game after a long absence. Not familiar with the new crops. When I try to plant potatoes or carrots I get a message to the end "you can only plant this in field tiles".
What are field tiles, where do you find/prepare/research them?

I haven't played in awhile, but I think you need to craft arable dirt blocks in order to plant crops

Maybe it's in the farming portion of the Craft Tree?

Yup, arable land is now craftable in the farming part of the tree. If you are in a forest world, the world usually generates with some arable land on the surface, so you can get a head start there.
