Spiders and Their Annoying Webs

Now I have read that the best way to rid of spider/web spawn is to make sure the area is well lit.

I have an (12x6 blocks) area underground in the Ice World for my sheep farm. It sits on a crafted wood floor with wood wall backing. I have about 6 or 7 Lamps (not torches)

And still they spawn. It doesn't affect the comfort of the house, it's still 100%. But it's annoying to look over and see it. I have to get the dwarves to stop what they're doing and remove the webs and spiders.

Anyone have a solution or tell me how you prevent this?

Thank

Okay thanks. I guess cleaning up webs and whatnot is like real life.
Except the spiders I have in my house aren't so big.

I'll deal with it.

The developer should add pets.

Specifically an Arachniore (Arachnid + Carnivore). This pet looks like a dog, but with eight legs and frequently patrols you buildings and tunnels for Spiders to eat.

Spiders have a chance to spawn in areas your dwarves have not walked through in the past 6 minutes.
FYI my cemetary pet took it upon themselves to kill a spider by hopping onto a scaffold I left in that area. Pets do come in handy.

I recently discovered how to mod the game files to get rid of spiders. You basically have to change one or two munbers on the creatures folder - go to Steam -> steamapps -> common -> craft the world -> data -> creatures. Right near the bottom of the file you get the details about spiders. You need to change one of two numbers:

spawn_deep value="20%"

This respresents the percentage of the underground that is free of spiders - i.e. the top 20%. I changed it to 90% , but you could set the numbers even higher.

unattended_time value="300"

This represents how many seconds after a dwarf has been on a tile a spider will be able to spawn - ie 5 minutes. I changed the number to 30000 in my game - so a tile needs to be unattended for over five hours before a spider will spawn , but presumably you could add another nought and have a spider-free game.

Note that to edit the creatures file, you have to close it, right click it and then choose edit from the menu that appears. This opens the file in a new format, and you can now edit it.

I haven't seen a spider in my game since I did this.

hopefully not to jinx it or anything, but i believe only a certain number of mobs can naturally spawn in an area, and spider webs only spread so far if nothing blocks them in (like a vertical wall of torches). theres a small chance they didnt spawn in the slime torch area just because the regular torch spot was already full

Well maybe its only much slower then. yesterday didnt get any spawns, but today allready got 2. :(

What I tend to do, is once I see a spider, I'll wall it in from both ends so it can't spread too far. I'm presuming that there are only so many that can spawn, because once I've blocked a certain number of them off, they seem to stop spawning.
So i set up the area like this:
Once in awhile I'll see a pet jump on the ladders and kill the spiders.
