building house?

why is the game so picky each time i build a house. is my house to big? totem not centered? dwarves just don't like me? not enough food? beds wrong place? wtf i do wrong? i want 3 doors 2 on sides one out bottom to expand.

You're missing a background tile behind your stockpile.

Also, unrelated to your problem, that underground Door in your ladder shaft should be a Hatch.

ok yes it seemed to work changing the door to a hatch and placing that tile. thanks was working with it for a while. love this game.

is there limit to size of house? does it need to be rectangular?

No limit to the size or shape (and technically speaking, you don't even need foreground walls http://i.imgur.com/e1OS33X.png ). The Totem just needs background tiles in place for the entirety of the area it covers. The area it covers is bounded by foreground walls and doors.

The Totem will only cover a certain area, though, so for e.g. Beds to function correctly, or for decorations to count toward comfort, they need to be within the totem's range.

you know approximate range or exact range of one totem? can i use second totem for expanding if needed? i think i got 2 early in game. i probably may not need all space. just curious to know.

Looks like a radius of ~10 blocks from the totem. And yes, adding a 2nd totem within range of the first will increase the effective range. I'm not sure exactly how the math on that works, though; never paid attention to it.

Does the Totem work as long as there's at least a back wall covering the entire radius? I can experiment some myself but I think ~10 radius is quite a good chunk of space to work within.


it's approximately 100 degrees outside today I'm thinking of staying inside and playing 'Craft the World' instead of going outside and turning into dust lol.
