If that does not work, or your have a wider problem (are any dwarves sleeping in bed?) try restarting the game.

Or move that 2nd hatch down a level. I also find that multiple totems tend to interfere with each other and try to build so that I only need one totem. You really only need the totem for sleeping, plus a bit extra space for luxury to get the totem rating up.
;)
I'm playing Lonely Mountain at the moment. This map is a little bigger than others.
- every dwarf had a bed for himself
- theres no problem with the shelter
- the dwarf are usually using the beds
but...
if they are fighting against monsters there is a point (with less hearts left) where they are scared and trying to run away
the monsters run after him and *surprise* the dwarf is getting killed
alternate maybe the dwarf decides to sleep on the floor in the middle of the fight (and is killed)
if you want to send him with 'R' or 'CTRL'+'R' to sleep, he is not moving anymore
the same if you control him an push the 'sleep'-button
i think this is because the way is too long (or complicated?) to his bed
because if you gave him a wormhole with the portal-spell the way is short and he will immediately run to his bed.
if this is a problem with very big worlds, maybe every dwarf should have his own bed at home, but additionally he will share a camp bed (in german feldbett) at a outpost when he is running out of live and that bed this is nearer and free
dwarfs staying at the mid of the mountain - at the bottom of the mountain you click on a monster to fight - dwarfs refusing to do anything because "way to long" (over the mountain)-sign over the head
if you make a wormhole by the dwarfs in the mid and by the monsters of the bottom of the mountain they are running and fighting...
