1. Do as much digging and harvesting of basic supplies/resourcecs as you can without completing quests or gaining as little experience as possible - the timer doesn't start until level 4. 2. Once the timer starts - then you can speed through as much crafting and quests as you can You want to level up as quick as possible with quests and crafting to get as many new dwarves as possible. Once you get 7 or 8 dwarves, it makes it easier.
3. Just make basic weapons and basic armors for each slot to help them survive. After that, some traps to help soak up some damage/slow monsters down.
4. Also make sure you have enough beds to make all your Dwarves rest up to full before the portal opens up. The higher your fortress' comfort level, the quicker your dwarves rest to full.
5. Sometimes, a random map just doesn't give you the needed supplies. - don't be afraid to restart the map if it doesn't give you what you need withon east reach of home. Also, make sure you use all of your mana before each level up, as you get a complete refill each time. By the time I've reached level 6 or 7, I usually have a portal or two with 100+ mins sitting on the map ready to be used - usually at least 1 near the giant stone mountain on each map, that I level down for free stone.
Hope it helps.
