Now 'before' this update, you only got mana increase, as distance from portal incareses, in the biome.
Now it's a feature in the main maps and campaigns.
I can't say I like this.
Well, every post I opened about transport, people asking about elevator and railroad, if those were worth it, and the amount of very confident aswers saying all that is BS, that Magic Portals made all the work... I quite understand the balance they're trying to make. Don't know though if it'll "solve" their problem.
I particularly like the idea of more complex transportations systems, like the elevators-railroads-additional stockpiles. Magic Portals for every thing, even far far away from the stockpile, even when you have a wonderful tech tree unlocked, even when you have time to plan and build... Sounds really dumb.
Because resources are finite on any map, and one must go into the biome to get more, the transportation systems are pointless.
They look nice and it's fun to watch your dwarves use them, but at what point is there a need?
Well I have 'one' point. You build across just a few blocks down, a long rail system, and then dig down from the rail line.
But you need a good stock plie of iron and a decent way into the tech tree before you can build it.
By the point, you've probably explored half the map.
There's no real solution for this, unless rails and all the tech was a level two tech tree thing, and you could build them from the get-go.. but again the iron cost is prohibative early game.
True... The way things are now, the rail and the elevator are just a whim, like some super luxury stuff you buy to boast. They don't quite fit the real interaction with the world.
