Is it true this game is made using a fangame engine?
Someone said it was, pretty sure they're lying, I mean that'd be pretty bad if it was.

Dunno, I assume it's an engine to make fangames, I mean, that's the most obvious thing.

Half-truth, it think. This games uses Multimedia Fusion (commercial game engine) with Sonic Worlds extention (fan made modification).

Still, I would not judge the game by it's engine, but by it's quality :)

Um, so like any other engine? I assume whoever said it propably meant game maker, or something like that. Most fan games are made on it. There isn't however something like a "fangame" engine". An engine is an engine.

...

I used the word "engine" waaaaay to much.

Does it matter? anyone could make a fangame with Unreal Engine or Cryengine

Couldn't you make a non-fangame with a fangame engine? and if so, would it no longer be a fangame engine?

Also, did this person mention the name of the engine?

Yeah, you could, never said they couldn't. Just asking if they used a fangame engine.

I think... Sonic-something.

Ahhh, that's the one. Well, it's certainly interesting, I'll have to read up on it now!

Well, no, normal game engines are for making any game, fangame engines are used for making games similar to the thing in question.

Maybe I'm saying it wrong...

Not really, I was just curious.

Since engines made just for fan games of a certain game are usually limited, I guess It does matter a little though.

I don't get the hang up on this whole Engine Business. One should always use whatever tools to make their job easier.

A bad artist blames their tools. A good one executes masterpieces with inferior ones. Yes, Freedom Planet was made using Multimedia Fusion and an engine intended to make Sonic fangames. The result should not necessarily be judged as a sum of its parts.

Custom engines are usually buggy when made by indie devs with limited manpower and money, it's generally better to use premade engine to save time, money and labor.

People have got to really stop using that kind of quote, it's really annoying to an artist. At the same time, a great artist that could produce masterpieces with inferior tools could produce even better masterpieces with superior tools.

Indeed. Nobody should use inferior tools to produce their best work UNLESS said tools have everything they need to pull off the job. That's why pixel artists can either use something as complex as Paint Shop Pro or something as minimalist as Paint.NET and still get the job done as long as they don't need the most complex tools for whatever they want.

Also there's no such thing as a "fangame engine" but I guess that's quite clear by now.

I get what you're trying to say here but you're wrong. Many engines made by companies have a certain genre in mind too. You have things as flexible as Unreal Engine and Game Maker... and then you have engines made for a specific genre like MUGEN, Fighting Maker 2nd, RPG Maker, stepmania and others.

The game is based on heavily modded Sonic Worlds engine for Clickteam Fusion 2.5.
I've seen the engine inside out from its early era, and yes I can tell in this game, Sonic World engine only used as base for platformer engine. Everything else like enemies, combat, gimmicks, cutscenes etc. are added by the developer themselves. It's not fairly limited, you can expand it to fit your needs.
