Does anyone know how to make a 2d Minecraft game?

I want to make a game thats 2d and invovles mining etc and you can make sentries and stuff to defend your base etc "sandbox" just dont know how to make it so everything is block based like when I want to spawn in a dirt block I dont know how I would make it so it spawns in a specific place so everything is square. Anyone know how?

How? That's would be a long long answer to be honest, but I can tell you something, it's possible, but I am sure it's not a walk with the dog if you know what I mean. No one will give you a full answer on how to do that, you gotta investigate yourself how from simple stuff you can get to that, you need first a random spawner for the level cubes, after you solve that in the X and Y axis you will have to go for the Z axis to create the depth (if you are working on a zenithal view). you gotta check if you want to do it platform or zenithal and begin to see what you need in each case.
