Alternative to 'Paint Mode"
Has anyone out there found or made an alternative to 'paint mode'? I'm looking for something easier to work with. Something along the lines of the WarCraft 2 or StarCraft map editors if anyone remembers that.

I constantly find that paint mode just doesn't paint or does so intermittently. And it provides no interface queues as to whether or not it will do something useful and it seems to be one of the near countless things that are not documented. I spend more time correcting it's mistakes than speeding up my work. Has anyone made a decent "map editor" as it were?

In my experience, it seems that Clickteam's paint mode doesn't like to overlap objects, which is why it seems to "skip" or not paint at all sometimes. Unfortunately, I don't think anything can be done about it, unless there is a setting somewhere that I'm not aware of.

As for custom map editors, most if not all that you'll find "free" will be overly complicated, and grid restricted (which can be good or bad depending on what you want).

When it comes to level design, in my last game Quadle, i built a level editor to build all my levels, then when I was done polished the UI and included it as a feature in game. So when disucssing a Map Edtior tool, it really comes down to how you game is going to work. Most pros I know at times build in fusion custom tools that help accelerate the process.

What I'm probably going to end up doing is just rendering the entire map out in maya and then using collision boxes.Sort of what Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale did. I wanted to do something based more on a tile-set but i"ll just split it into zones and chunks.
