The campaign aside, sure, there's little reason to play it when Kane's Wrath exists, but that's not because Tiberium Wars is bad, but because Kane's Wrath ISN'T bad and makes a great game even better. And it's not like the cost isn't worth it for the campaign alone (unless your sole goal is to spend spend hundreds of hours in a nearly dead multiplayer scene or single player skirmish and totally ignore the campaigns).
That said, while $30 for both is good (a $5 for the bundle including both would make it nicer), it's hard to recommend when the whole collection is a far better value, although you'll have to go to Origin for it.
In other words, Kane's Wrath being such a GREAT value doesn't make another GOOD value poor. Good expansion packs were almost always like this in the past; no reason to play the base alone game once you have them.
Here is the thing, the only copy of TW worth buying might be the hard disk version because of how buggy and broken the campaign is. If you're focused solely on multiplayer, you still should desire KW because TW was poorly balanced. This was all due to EA's patching, which ruined the campaign's flow and balance even in KW but TW even has impossible to complete secondary objectives. It might be possible to install older patches, but it is unlikely.
At the end, majority of people just getting into your series are not going to appreciate TW because it's not a good value. It's an outdated interpretation of what KW is with a lot of bugs. I enjoy the game too, but to say it being "good" (when, honestly without nostalgic bias, it's not) therefore "good value" and suddenly worth buying for other people new to the series... it's just weird.
buy it on Origin for $5 to get all the games, sure, but not here on Steam. $30 is too much even for both TW and KW.
In some ways I prefer TW tbh. No epic units and refineries aren't annoyingly over costed. And I've just played through the campaign for the first time on pc and saw no bugs. Have done it twice in the past on 360 with no bugs there either.
But I do agree 30 quid is far too much for either game at this point. Honestly there should probably be a rule that prevents games 10+ years old from being priced over a certain point lol.
P.S. Does anyone know the controls for the PC versions? Again, i was a 360 kid so i cant even playh these right now. speaking of not being able to play something, I miss Kane's Challenge. Those were fun missions.
