Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath™

Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath™

SHOULD NOT REQUIRE C&C3: Tiberum Wars to play Kane's Wrath. IMO
So steam is going to force me (and everyone else) to buy the not-as-good C&C3 game in order to play Kane's Wrath. On Xbox 360 it was a stand-alone title. It wasn't DLC, it was its own game. Different controls, new campaign, multiple other factions. Kane's Wrath is the pinnacle of the series, in my humble opinion. Anyway.... I guess I'm off to spend $30 bucks to buy the game I REALLY want. Just wanted to spout off for a moment.

Imagine wanting to play an expansion but didn't bother with the base game.

Let's be honest, TW is neither necessary or even worth buying.

It is if you want to play KW.

I disagree. Tiberium Wars is one of the better entries to the series. I say that as someone who got into the series on the PlayStation with Red Alert (Retaliation) and loved Red Alert, Red Alert 2, and Yuri's Revenge all those years ago, and then got into the Tiberium universe through Renegade and went back to revisit Tiberian Sun and Fire Storm that my friends had (but I never finished completely) all those years ago. I was disappointed with the way the series moved after EA started taking over, but Tiberium Wars is not only an exception to this, but even stands among Westwood's best IMO (having generic music instead of a real sountrack like the classics is the only semi-major issue I have with it really).

The campaign aside, sure, there's little reason to play it when Kane's Wrath exists, but that's not because Tiberium Wars is bad, but because Kane's Wrath ISN'T bad and makes a great game even better. And it's not like the cost isn't worth it for the campaign alone (unless your sole goal is to spend spend hundreds of hours in a nearly dead multiplayer scene or single player skirmish and totally ignore the campaigns).

That said, while $30 for both is good (a $5 for the bundle including both would make it nicer), it's hard to recommend when the whole collection is a far better value, although you'll have to go to Origin for it.

In other words, Kane's Wrath being such a GREAT value doesn't make another GOOD value poor. Good expansion packs were almost always like this in the past; no reason to play the base alone game once you have them.

I wish to clarify I am on the exact same boat as you as far as how I got into the series. Retaliation, then Red Alert 2, then Generals, then Yuri's Revenge, then Tiberium Wars, finally Kanes Wrath.

Here is the thing, the only copy of TW worth buying might be the hard disk version because of how buggy and broken the campaign is. If you're focused solely on multiplayer, you still should desire KW because TW was poorly balanced. This was all due to EA's patching, which ruined the campaign's flow and balance even in KW but TW even has impossible to complete secondary objectives. It might be possible to install older patches, but it is unlikely.

At the end, majority of people just getting into your series are not going to appreciate TW because it's not a good value. It's an outdated interpretation of what KW is with a lot of bugs. I enjoy the game too, but to say it being "good" (when, honestly without nostalgic bias, it's not) therefore "good value" and suddenly worth buying for other people new to the series... it's just weird.

buy it on Origin for $5 to get all the games, sure, but not here on Steam. $30 is too much even for both TW and KW.

I would pay 30 for Kansas wrath alone. The AI in TW is horrible. It will take poor paths and get stuck on terrain and then not even attack the enemy when they fall under attack. There was one mission that was a nightmare because of this on the NOD side. Rose tinted glases still don't help much. Though, I do love these games both. Honestly I'm not sure I like them as much on PC. I'm a console pleb. As one co worker once put it lol. Anyway I just wish I had kanes challenge. It's weird to not see it. I need it. Well I do have it on 360 still. Almost the entire reason I have my 360. Kanes wrath alone is worth that console. To me anyway.

Just wait for a sale. I bought both for less than a tenner some months back, and I bought them again for a friend at the same price a week or so ago.

In some ways I prefer TW tbh. No epic units and refineries aren't annoyingly over costed. And I've just played through the campaign for the first time on pc and saw no bugs. Have done it twice in the past on 360 with no bugs there either.

But I do agree 30 quid is far too much for either game at this point. Honestly there should probably be a rule that prevents games 10+ years old from being priced over a certain point lol.

I honestly didn't mid buying them both for 30. I just did it lol. I still prefer the 360 versions. And I aslo kinda like TW to be honest; it had some interesting mechanics that KW lacks. One like you said with the refineries. But the other thing that was fun was that power plants had a small area of ground control. Just enough to put ANOTHER power plant on... see where this is going? Ive has people online just attack me... with their base lmao. throw down a ♥♥♥♥ ton of power plants and turrets and you dont even need an army. Not sure if anyone else remembers that. but i learned that tactic the hard way. Also didn't think I'd get so many comments on this thread.
P.S. Does anyone know the controls for the PC versions? Again, i was a 360 kid so i cant even playh these right now. speaking of not being able to play something, I miss Kane's Challenge. Those were fun missions.

I dunno, I didn't buy the original when I first played (on Xbox 360)

Here, in Argentina, this game costs 2 bucks. Too bad for you, but in the old times, base game was always required for playing expansions. Just look at Call of Duty United Offensive, Age of Empires II The Conquerors, AoEIII: Warchiefs and Asian Dynasties, Warcraft III Frozen Throne. Even all C&C games requires the base game to play expansions. I do not think that someone just say "hey i want to play Red Alert Counterstrike without buying the base game". That's the way games were sold before, now it's just tons of DLC.

Oh yes I'm aware. I remember the days of the original xbox. When DLC came on a disk. I've been at it for some time now lol. I'm new to computer gaming (I'm horrible with it) so I thought things would be a little more strait forward. Turns out that's what consoles are lol. Duh... 😅
