I worked out most of the modern controls, but I can't backstep off and grab a ledge.
I know the modern controls simply don't work when practicing in Lara's mansion, because to do directional jumps you must have your guns out, and she is unarmed in her mansion so you simply can't do it.

But there is also no question that firing your guns and doing general traversal is faster and easier to handle, walking to an end and quickly unholstering your guns so you can do a back jump is odd, but overall modern controls feel worth the few sacrifices.

However, there is one very useful move that i think is impossible, jumping backwards off a ledge so you can grab it, because you must have your guns out to do those directional jumps it means Lara can't grab the ledge you just jumped off.

Am I unaware of some other trick you can do with modern controls to do direction jumps without guns? or is this move actually impossible while using them?

Jumps with guns is not how you supposed to do them, its a clunky workaround, nor how it should be played.

I know the game wasn't designed with modern controls in mind, but there is not way to deny that they have their benefits, for the most part, camera control feels much nicer than the default (there are some areas of extreme camera faults, but changing to old graphics mode fixes it for those areas for some reason)

And while the combat is made almost trivial by strafe shooting with modern controls, I still like being able to do it, it's never much fun wrestling with awkward input when you know how a thing needs to be done but you're wrangling buttons to attempt it.

For the most part the modern control conversion is a very good job, considering how the platforming is designed for a tank controlled grid of squares and the level layout is identical, it's good they even made it function.

It's just that single back hop off a ledge to grab it that is missing.

For now I have found that if i walk forward two steps with the guns out, then I back hop, Lara can put the guns away and stretch her arms in time to grab the ledge, so it functions, just awkwardly.

I think they need to patch the modern control scheme so that when you select it the D pad is completely separate from the analogue stick and functions only for controlling your jump directions, while the analogue stick maintains it's fluid smooth movement.

It's not as if anyone who picks modern controller scheme is going to do it with a controller that doesn't have analogue sticks, so i think removing the D pad and putting jump direction functions on it instead would be good.

Just tried out the modern controls a bit. The easiest way I've found of accomplishing the drop off ledge and grab thing is to do a roll off the edge from the same distance you would do a back hop and then grab.

lol, holy cow. Didn't even think to try that. Yeah, that's far easier than what I was doing.

No problem.
At the beginning, I didn't do it either and used the roll feature.

- Hold ledges when falling:
Run towards the ledge and let Lara fall while holding the grab button (secondary/alternate). She will turn around and grab the ledge.

- Back stepping:
Hold the draw weapons button, wait for animation, tap backwards.
OR
Press Look key to toggle to look mode, hold back. While still holding back press look key to toggle it off.
