The "Modern Controls" are terrible
I was expecting at least a little bit of effort from them, but instead what we got was a half-assed addition. It actually takes away a lot of control of Lara and makes setting up jumps much harder. I'm not asking for much here. Just the ability to side jump, backflip, and backstep on demand, which the modern control scheme doesn't seem to let me do.

Don't get me wrong: Everything else is great, but given I wanted to recommend this game to a friend who literally wouldn't try the originals because of the tank controls, I wanted the modern control scheme to actually be semi-decent.

I reverted back to tank and won't lose any sleep over it, but I was REALLY hoping I could finally convince him to play, just for the new scheme to be worse than the old one somehow.

EDIT:
Okay, so...

The modern controls DO have some of that functionality. It's just hidden behind having to have your weapons drawn.
The modern control scheme has you hold LT on gamepad to wield your weapons. When you release LT, it puts them away.
When you DON'T hold LT, you get movement akin to the Legends Tomb Raider games. Non-tank standard movement you get with most third person adventure games.
When you DO hold LT, you get fine-tuned precise movement when jumping or backstepping, which is needed for specific platforming. So with your guns drawn, you tap back on LS and you hop backward. You press jump and then a direction, you do side or back jumps. So it IS there. It's just not as intuitive for someone like me who has played these games through with tank controls on KBM.

Maybe try with Tomb Raider: Anniversary? I know, they are different things by the end but if the objective is for your friend to become a fan... That might do the trick. It was my proper starting point after I couldn't figure out Chronicles' (terrible entry point) controls as a kid.

As for this remaster.. It's similar as the remasters of the remake of RE1 and RE0. You can add a modern way to play all you want, but these games were designed with their own control scheme in mind from the get-go. By changing that, they break the game 😅.

actually would be great solution if cross buttons would be for tank controls while joystick for modern, so you can use both movements at same time

it was like that in resident evil 0-1 remaster for example

Is there a button for back hopping with modern controls? How is one supposed to line up a running jump!?

luckily im very used to the tank controls but I tried out the modern ones and can't figure out how your suppose to backstep to drop grab a ledge?? This makes the game literally impossible to complete. Am I missing something or did no one play test the game with the modern controls.

The modern controls are awful. They're unusable. I don't even know why they were added in with how bad they are. I was hoping for something actually modern with these vs the originals. The controls were the main reason I was looking forward to this remaster. The original controls were the one thing I didn't want to relive.

This is the cause of 90% of my issues. It's an actual problem, and the one that made me revert.

Yes, but actually no. The problem with Anniversary in general is that it is ONLY game 1, and game 1 is actually the one I'm least invested in/knowledgeable of. 2 and 3 are the ones I played the most... And 4, but 4 isn't in here.
Long story short, I'm trying to sell him on the classic Tomb Raider games, not a remake of just the first one. It's not a bad idea. It's just not the right one.

Yeah basically. I wanted to play on Gamepad. I'm over here playing on KBM like ye olden days of my childhood instead.

I find its ok in wide open spaces but when you get into a small passage and trying to make jumps it's awful. Lucky I can save scum my way over every jump.

idk what's worse, trying to navigate while shooting with tank controls, or trying to line up running jumps with modern controls

Navigating with tank controls while shooting is actually really easy. It's harder with modern controls.
You can easily flip, roll, side jump, backflip, etc to avoid getting hit with tank controls. You don't have that freedom with modern controls.

I would like some hybrid control style mode, the gunplay is absolutely terrible with the modern controls. I'm still keeping the game as otherwise it looks gorgeous. I am also okay with the tank controls but I am in the same boat as you in that I wanted to recommend this to friends and I just can't with how they are right now.

It's nice to play TR1 without having to boot into DOSbox through GOG or Steam, so that alone makes it worth it. Add to the fact that everything runs butter smooth, and there's really no need to refund this. It's still a superior way to play the classics.

Hold secondary button and run (front) in any edge, she will make a quick 180º turn and grab it. (modern control only)

it's a gabe Feb 13, 2024 @ 11:58pm
Tbf, I had a feeling this was going to be the case. These games were never designed with analogue movement in mind. They've always been methodical platformers within a precise grid-like environment.

I'm not sure there's a lot they can do short of remaking these games from the ground up to accommodate the modern control scheme. This isn't the kinda stuff you slap on a remaster and call it a day considering how fundamental movement is in these games.

I think you're overthinking it. An easier solution would just be to enable certain movement mechanics by combining the two options. For example: Instead of running straight directly behind you, moving the stick back or pressing down arrow back would hop back. Instead of front jumping to the side, pressing jump and a direction simultaneously would jump sideways or backward, just like classic controls, but still grant the greater movement of the modern controls.

When the camera locks onto the enemy it's easy to become disoriented with tank controls. I think the best way may be: modern controls during combat where Lara would rotate with the locked on enemy, then tank controls when weapons aren't drawn.
