Multiplayer Options?

So I've got the game here on Steam (and I've loved it since buying it back in winter sale).

But some friends recently started a multiplayer game, all of them NOT with Steam accounts (they purchased their games through Origin, or even a hard copy back in the day).

How would I go about joining them in a multiplayer region? And if it's not possible due to Steam vs Origin stuff, how can I play multiplayer on Steam?

Right now, when clicking the middle button on the main menu, I'm brought to simcity.ea.com, which simply says, "403 - Forbidden."

SimCity 4 is a 2003 game. It does not have multiplayer options.
Multiplayer is in SimCity (2013) that is Origin exclusive.

Do not despair, though. SC4 is very popular single player game, with tons of mods, viral community and content. :)

Both games have support forums and mods in Simtropolis. I suggest that you visit there to know what you have and what you don't.

Sorry, I should have specified that they managed to play multiplayer with the 2003 version (Simcity 4 Deluxe, the one we have here on Steam).

I'm just dispairing because I can't play with them. I've heard people linking their regions together with Dropbox, which I suppose is a possibility if I knew how to do that.

Also curious why I'm getting the 403 - Forbidden page, and if other people also get that.

Aha! Now I know what we are talking about.

- 403 is there, because EA has closed all SC4 pages and pulled support away from it long ago. There just isn't anything there. The game relies entirely on community.

- You need to contact your friedns about sharing their region. Here are the basics of it:

Simcity 5 (or Simcity 2013) is the answer. I play it every day Online wtih my girlfriend and it saves your work permanent. With recent patching, building the Great Works now is no problem at all anymore.
