Where to put mods when playing on Steam
I've had this game for years and have downloaded tons of mods, but I just bought it on Steam cause it was on sale and it seems like it would be easier to just play it here. But, where should the mods be located if I'm going to play this on Steam? What folder(s) dot they go in? thanks in advance!

For Windows users:

My Documents/SIMCity 4/Plugins

For Mac, no idea.

If you've played this game before as you said and you're used to installing Mods this should have been a no brainer for you... just saying.

Thanks for the info! What about the launcher? how does that work with Steam? Do I even need it? I have just the "Launcher" and also "Quick Launch". Do I start one of these up before I start Steam? how does this work?
I'm not familiar with the launcher as the game runs fine on my system. I do however set my launch parameters on the game's "steam launch parameter" settings though.

As for how to run the game, you definitely need to run Steam first BEFORE you run the game or any other launcher (I think that's how it goes) because even if you just run the game by clicking on the game's "shortcut" on your Desktop, the game will manually start Steam up before it loads up, so to avoid any hassle you definitely need to be running Steam ahead before you run SC4.

I am currently using Windows 7 and placed all my mods in the path you suggested. Whenever I try to launch the game I always get "GDriverWindow--DirectX (Not Responding)" error message. However, if I leave the Plugins folder empty, then the game runs fine. I have tried renaming my plugins folder so the game creates a new plugin folder. Then deleting the new plugin folder and renaming the original plugin folder back to plugins. I have even tried moving all the mods from the original plugin folder to the new folder created by the game. Any suggestion on how to fix it?

@VTHokie2000:

What file types are you placing inside the Plugins folder?

If you placed an .exe. file, ergo an installer, inside there you should realize that you first need to run the installer afterwards delete it once the mod is properly installed.

Just the extracted mods I have downloaded from the various sites. I have the zip files and .exe files stored some place else. I originally started playing the game on a CD version and switched to Steam version tonight because I couldn't get the CD to work anymore. I even tried using the SCLauncher with the CD and that didn't work. I did notice that the SCLauncher does launch the game, but doesn't recognize all my mods even though they are checked. Since I can play the game via Steam, I guess I am looking for that solution and just forget about the launcher for now.

I went through all my mod folders and I did find some uninstall.exe files (not sure if that makes a difference or not). After some other clean up I am now getting "GDriverWindow--Software (Not Responding)" error message when the mods are in the plugin folder and works fine when the folder is empty. I uninstalled and hid the KB3086255 update awhile back, so I don't think that is the issue. Just to be on the safe side I even tried compatibility mode (Windows XP Service Pack 2) to see if that would work, but it didn't work. I have the privilege level set at administrator, so I know that isn't the issue. I am starting to have a bad feeling that I might have to reinstall all the mods to see if that fixes the problem.
This "GDriverWindow--Software" error you've been encountering is a new one on me, granted I'm not really that too technically learned. Have you tried asking for assistance on this problem over at SC4Devotion and/or at Simtropolis by any chance? You might even get better answers there :)

I had thought about it. However, since I am playing the game on Steam, I thought I would give here a try first.
was this problem ever solved?
