Managing Air Pollution
Anyone have some tips on how to contain Dirty Industry Air Pollution? I developed a strategy of placing agriculture around the power plants and medium industry zones, then plant trees until the Air Pollution is resolved (mostly, air pollution will still be present on the power plant or industry buildings). While it works for power plants if I make big enough Agriculture Zones, I am still struggling to find a way to balance and zero out air pollution from dirty industry. Does anyone know how much air pollution a 4x4 zone of Dirty Industry Buildings will cause, and how many tiles away the pollution will spread? As for water pollution, I've learned to handle it so that Agriculture pollution doesn't get too far.

If you have large swathes of I-D, you are going to have pollution, period. There is no fix to that, beyond not using I-D or 'cheating' by modifying the I-D lots to not create pollution. You can control the spread of that pollution somewhat by the judicious use of trees. Don't forget too that the Pollution ordinance (clean air act), will reduce the overall amount each building pollutes.

The nature of the game is such that when sims become more educated, I-M and later I-HT should replace I-D buildings. However both, especially I-HT, desire unpolluted areas before they want to appear. This can be especially problematic when a lot of I-HT grows, but one I-D building starts belching pollution, messing with desirability and causing abandonment.

One partial solution to the problem is a mod called the Industrial Revolution Mod, this has two main functions:

1) It changes Ind zoning, so low density zones grow only I-D and polluting I-M. Whereas high density zones grow only low polluting I-M and I-HT. This one change gives you much more control as a player and prevents I-HT abandonment.

2) Lets face it, the industrial lots in the game aren't very varied. Maxis it appears rushed this aspect and it really shows. IRM completely re-made all the Industrial lots, using some custom prop packs along with ramping up the detail on them.

I should note it's recommend to install IRM only when playing a new region. I highly recommend at least the first three sets here. The fillers are optional, but can allow you to make much more realistic industrial complexes. There are also additional addons, all created by the same guy, TWrecks to expand your Industry even further.
