SimCity 4 Deluxe

SimCity 4 Deluxe

How to change save location?
Now that I can actually play the game, it would be good to know how I can get the game to save onto the USB I play it off of instead of saving onto a harddrive which is not mine.

Hopefully that alone will also solve the issue of the game also not saving settings.

Good info,
only if you are attempting to play on a "friends" computer; not so good if you are wanting to play on a "Library" (or otherwise "public") computer.

The only way I know of (other than logging in as a different User) to relocate save files (that normally end up somewhere in the current User's "Documents" folder) is to map a logical drive to an empty folder ... in "Disk Management", which requires Administrator Authority.

"Disk Management" eh? As in like somewhere in control panel? Sounds like something that would have to be repeated before every session.
Device Manager for Windows 10?
Well, Settings -> PC Settings -> System -> Storage -> Change where new content is saved -> EVERYTHING set to my USB didn't work, so, that's just perfect.

Winows 10
  • "Create and format hard disk partitions" -> Disk Management ...
  • "Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools -> Create and format hard disk partitions" -> Disk Management (microsoft management console snap-in) ...
  • right-click on start -> Disk Management

For details on the suggested use of Disk Management you might try to ...
Ask Cortana "mount volume windows 10" ?

Edit:
Suggesting to mount a "logical volume" (aka disk partition) on an empty folder ... say the folder "<documents>\SimCity 4" (with any contents temporarily moved elsewhere, then moved/copied back after closing Disk Management).

Welp, no "System and Security" or "Create and format hard disk partitions" in Administrative Tools (not that it sounds like something which would help here, certainly not necessary for other games): https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1445625877
Even if this method worked, it doesn't sound permament as the library resets everything after use,
though you did say something earlier which suggests you may already be aware of this weakness:

So, in other words, sounds like I'm just going to have to load the game once to create SC4 docu-ments folder (along with uping the settings) before cut/copying my regions into said folder, later on, cut then back afterwards. Not hard, just would be nice if I could do without like with other games.

Okay, NetPCFail shows where you mis-stepped ... You need to have System and Security where I am seeing All Control Panel Items!

When using the Windows File Explorer to reach the Control Panel (instead of right clicking the Start Button ... bottom left corner of screen? for a more direct route to the Disk Management console?), do NOT go to "All Control Panel Items" - but keep scrolling down to find System and Security, then don't expand System and Security but just select it ...

This should pop-open a window that has an Administrative Tools header line near the bottom of the page ... one of the topics under THIS header line should be Create and format hard disk partitions ?

The above does have a better chance of being maintained between sessions if one is on a friend's private computer; rather than a public computer at a Library.

And on a Library Computer, I would expect to have to do some setup - regardless of what external storage is being used (even if you go the so called user friendly route of One Drive); unless said Library allows one to maintain a user profile between sessions?

Oh, wow, you actually ended up replying! I didn't think you would after 2 weeks of not doing so. Now, you start off saying I mis-stepped eh? Nah mate, you mislead, you said "Control Panel -> System and Security ...", so I went to control panel! Is that not what "All Control Panel Items" is? Would be pretty stupid if it isn't and yet another reason I'm glad I stuck with 7 on my own system... whatever the case, I'm not sure when I'm next going to visit the good librar(y/ies) [Only 3 run SC4 out of all the ones I've visited, only one is somewhat close.] to try out your suggestion despite how fruitless it appears right now for reasons already stated. Lastly, while I agree some setup should be expected on library computers, if it's not permament, it's not worth doing. And it should be possible to make it permament for SC4 just like it is for Victoria 2 and Rome: Total War, the later of which didn't actually require any setup to archive to my memory, awesome right? If only SC4 as well...

... to each their own (way of doing things) ...

For me, accessing a control panel via the File Explorer is not all that natural; and in this case "All Control Panel Items" does not truly contain all items accessible via a Windows Control Panel !! ... as the continuation of items literally under (but still at same depth as) "All Control Panel Items" might clue one in to this being so ...
No where in that earlier post did you say "Windows Control Panel":

If "All Control Panel Items" doesn't contain, well, all control panel items! Then that's just nonsense false advertising then isn't it? Can you agree to that? You started off listing the manual way of accessing it so that's what I tried! I prefer knowing how to do things anyway.
Okay, this time making sure it's just "Control Panel" and not 'All ... items', and STILL not there: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1481305975 Even though your idea isn't worth doing in my view, I'm still curious to see if it does work, but sadly, you keep misleading me. If you're gonna try again, get it right! Though, maybe it's just hidden. :/

If it is not administatively hidden (like maybe on a Library Computer):

Wait, so you don't actually click on Administrative tools? Maybe it was there then, maybe, I'll check.
Um, yeah, seems to be there, haven't tried it yet, will let you know when I do, unlikely to be soon.
