Not jobs but not enough workers
Came back to the game after some 6 years. Tried building a city, but I've got an issue where a lot of residential areas have no jobs/"abandoned due to commute time" while at the same time it says that businesses are leaving the town due to lack of workers.

Traffic is good, almost all roads are green congestion-wise. Bus network spanning the entire town, trains etc., so commute time can't be the issue. I've even tried setting up commercial zones right outside the residential zones, still nothing.

I've also tried to set up a neighbouring town with industry only, but despite the industry in the neighbouring city having workers, the game isn't displaying any traffic going to the neighbouring town.

I'm using NAM, maybe it's breaking the game somehow?

In a vanilla game I would recommend using the traffic query to see how far Sims live from where they work? And, in vanilla, sims will NOT use transit that doubles back; zig-zag - left-right-left-right - is okay, but two lefts or two rights in a row will not work!

The Rush Hour expansion (the "deluxe" in SimCity 4 Deluxe) did away will every sim taking the first job they come to ... once a job is filled - other sims will need to look elsewhere. And you will need middle and upper level management (higher wealth sims) to supervise / hire / fire / etc.

FYI: commercial zones will do better with yellow-or-red congestion-wise roads.

With NAM, please do read the documentation that came with NAM, to avoid accidentally breaking the game.

Have you applied the High Tech Industry fix?

I had the same problem you had. I would even zone commerical/industrial right near the weatlhy residential zones and they still show the no job icon. I applied the fix and i no longer have the no job icon or abandonded due to commute time
