Update and mac

Is it possible to update(patch) the game. In this case, how?

It depends where you got the game from. If you bought it digitally from anywhere BUT Origin, your game should come pre-patched with every official Maxis patch (the Simcity4.exe should be version 1.1.641.0). If you have a CD copy, its a whole other story, but it's not too hard to do either.

I bought it from Steam for Mac and when I start the game it says v 1.1.1. Is it also possible to install mods? How?

I find it weird that your version number is so low. Is that what the actual executable says? E.g. in Windows I can right click on Simcity4.exe -> Properties, and in a window that appears under the Detail tab I can see File Version: 1.1.641.0[image.prntscr.com].

With a patched game, you certainly can install mods. The vast majority you just place in Simcity4/Plugins found somewhere in your user directory. If there are any other special installation instructions. Be aware though, that mac OS enforces a strict limit on the number of files you are using, but that can be circumnavigated with Datpacking[sc4devotion.com] (recommended), or alledgedly, UNIX commands[community.simtropolis.com].

With an unpatched game, you can also install and use many mods, but they may not work correctly (e.g. no nitelights will appear on any custom buildings).

I am experiencing the same. I had a pre-patched SC4 installed through Steam, on this machine but I did a factory refresh after installing a SSD. Now Im trying to setup again and I can only download 1.1.1 from the steam store. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no joy.
