Update #2: Tonemapping and Crash Fixes

Thanks for playing the Half-Life 2 RTX demo and sharing your feedback. It has given our mod team a lot of insight on what we should change for the final release.

Our latest update fixes some scenarios where users were experiencing crashes, as well as introduces a more accurate tonemapper in response to community feedback.

This new tonemapper fixes an issue that caused the displayed image to be over-brightened. When you now play Half-Life 2 RTX, you will see more accurate colorization, especially in areas of extreme light and dark. Areas in shadow will feel much darker, while areas in light will still allow details to shine through without being overexposed and “washed out”.

Additionally, some game objects with extreme bright light (like fire) have been colorized by the new tone mapper to better show the full spectrum of light, making it look more realistic and closer to the original game.
This new tonemapper represents our first step in responding to community feedback, with many more adjustments to lighting and volumetrics to come in a future patch.

We released the Half-Life 2 RTX Demo as a way to get feedback from the community early to build the best remaster we can–we thank you for taking the time to play it, and letting us know what you want to see from Half-Life 2 RTX. We hope to remaster this classic we all love in a way that respects your memory of it, and also feels exciting for a new generation of players who have never played it before.

Changes:
  • Tonemapper has been updated to display a more accurate image
  • Fix for a softlock in town_02 where Grigori would occasionally not throw the shotgun to the player
  • Fix for a crash state
  • Fix for a stall on initial game load
  • Issued fixes to the crossbow, Grigori bucket, and mine-hopper assets
  • Fix for a visual artifact when initially moving with DLSS Frame Generation on
Investigating Reported Issues:
  • We are investigating an issue where some game overlays can cause crashes when used with the Half-Life 2 RTX Demo. We recommend disabling overlays before starting the demo, but can confirm players looking to measure performance can use FrameView [www.nvidia.com] without risking a crash.
  • Some players are reporting a crash during the first-time they start the game, due to issues with shader compilation. If you experience this, please start the game again.
  • Steam Hotkey for Screenshots (F12) will crash Half-Life 2 RTX. We recommend using NVIDIA app’s Alt+F1 screenshot feature, NVIDIA app’s Alt+F9 video recording feature, or OBS “Display Capture” to take screenshots and video.
  • When Desktop Capture is active in NVIDIA app’s settings (Alt+Z --> settings cog --> Video capture) video recording can at times cease working in the Half-Life 2 RTX demo, requiring users to restart the demo. To prevent this, please disable Desktop Capture in NVIDIA app’s settings.

Did anyone else get a BSOD?
4070 TI Super, 14770k here. I booted it up, I tried to look at the settings while it was in the Valve logo intro. Then the menu loaded and bam, BSOD. I have updated my MOBO and have not had issues compiling shaders since.

Hotfix #1: Update on Various Issues

A hotfix has been pushed live to adjust the displayed download size.
Changes:
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the download size of Half-Life 2 RTX to appear larger than it actually was. The correct download size of 44.1GB is now displayed during installation.
Investigating Reported Issues:
  • We are investigating an issue where some game overlays can cause crashes when used with the Half-Life 2 RTX Demo. We recommend disabling overlays before starting the demo, but can confirm players looking to measure performance can use FrameView [www.nvidia.com]without risking a crash.
  • Some players are reporting a crash during the first-time they start the game, due to issues with shader compilation. If you experience this, please start the game again.
We are also reading your feedback, and will apply patches for reported bugs in the future. Here are a list of known issues we are currently tracking:

  • Father Grigori occasionally will not throw the player the shotgun in d1_town_02. If this occurs, please reload a save from before exiting to the rooftop.

The Half-Life 2 RTX Demo is now available for download.

Orbifold is updating every texture, model, and level, adding extra geometric detail to buildings and surfaces to realistically interact with fully ray-traced lighting. Even particles and animations are being revitalized to bring Half-Life 2 to modern graphical standards.
Before you play, please ensure you have the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver [www.nvidia.com] installed. The minimum recommended GPU for the demo is a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, enabling a range of system configs to play:

Press Alt+X in-game to open the RTX Remix settings menu, where you can quickly switch between a number of graphics and DLSS presets, creating a good experience on RTX GPUs dating back to the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti.

Raytracing is the worst thing to happen to games in decades
Nvidia are deliberately pushing Raytracing because they want to sell new cards. People don't really care about it that much and would prefer cheaper cards but Nvidia gotta business so they push RTX. Half-Life looks fine. Most games look fine. Pretty sure the Indiana Jones game would have looked fine if they hadn't implemented RT. It's a sham (not a scam) and it works on the FOMO crowd and those who can afford it but it really doesn't matter. Cyberpunk looks fine without it on as do most games. It's a litt...

Radeon users shouldn't bother...?
I know it's Nvidia funded/co-developed, so Radeon support of any kind is left out for obvious reasons. I wasn't expecting great performance on Portal RTX with my Radoen 6950 XT, but in that game at just 1080P I saw GPU usage barely at 7% and my FPS was 1. Yes, 1. Radeon's have hardware RT, and Nvidia shills love to remind us all the time it's useless, but the hardware is there so why in Portal (and I assume in this) it seems to be intentionally coded to under utilise the card (7% remember). Why is everyone SO ungrateful??
You can crap on NVIDIA and their useless graphic cards all you want, but Orbifold Studios? This is a small team of fans just working their hardest to make a free, faithful remaster of a game. NVIDIA may be greedy with how much they're pushing to make people buy their cards, but the team at orbifold are working day and night to remake every asset in the game. It's okay if you don't like raytracing or NVIDIA, but please at least show some gratefulness for their work. EDIT : Just to clarify, I'm not talking ...
