2022 Definitive FIX THREAD! EASY METHOD!
So you want to play Deadly Premonition? Maybe you recently heard how weirdly awesome it is, maybe you played it on console and want to check out the PC version, maybe you played the PC version and want to suffer another attempt to get it working, or maybe you just got into Twin Peaks and heard about the magical wonder that is Deadly Premonition (which was heavily inspired by Twin Peaks).

Like Twin Peaks, Deadly Premonition is a wonderful, bizarre and unique experience. Unfortunately, it is one that is mostly hindered by the unfortunate fact that every single version of this game has serious problems in one form or another.

The original 360 version has the horrible over the shoulder camera (that some like) and wonky controls, and the PS3 version has a horrifically bad frame rate. The Switch version is good but often drops well under the 60fps it tries to run at, especially in driving sections (which also feel off). And while the PC version suffers from a locked 720p resolution and no graphics options, there is a patch to fix that (DPFIX to the rescue). HOWEVER even DPFix cannot save the PC version from being a nightmare to run, even once you have it running well, it tends to crash a lot. And is just a massive pain in the ass. As you will see from the many people posting in this discussion board. I'm sure you have seen the several long threads telling you how to get it work and read through the daunting amount of issues listed to overcome. Hell I wrote one of them myself in 2017 (https://steamcommunity.com/app/247660/discussions/0/1290691937708333615/?ctp=5).

Well the good news is, I am here to tell you after trying every version, playing with every fix there is. Having played hundreds of hours of this great game and spent many of them banging my head against a wall getting it to run. There is finally a way to play this game on PC with very few issues (virtually none outside of simple set up). Are you ready?....

Play the PS3 version via emulation!

Yep, that's right. It is by far easier, to play the PS3 version via RCPS3 (PS3 emulator) than it is to get the PC version running!

Set up is quick and easy and it runs much more stable. I have an RTX2080 and am able to easily get 4k 60fps. If you are fine with 1080p, you will get 60fps on any half decent GPU!

You will have to look up guides for how to install RPCS3 and get the PS3 BIOS, and the Deadly Premonition ISO, but I'll post my settings and I promise you it is the least painful way to play!

NOTE: Use build rpcs3-v0.0.12-10844 - Later versions have introduced some shadow flickering. But the game runs rock solid on this build. You can found that build here - https://github.com/RPCS3/rpcs3-binaries-win/releases/download/build-2e88924cb9100c0458fd93ca08cd5c7df223a9e6/rpcs3-v0.0.12-10844-2e88924c_win64.7z

Also, Yuzu the Nintendo Switch Emulator runs the Switch version really well too, and seems to have slightly better FX but worse anti aliasing (due to the emulator more than the version). It doesn't run as well as the PS3 version (I get 40fps vs 60fps) but it does have the added benefit of being able to import your PC save (uses the exact same file), and even move that save to an actually Switch (if it is modded).

And unlike the PC version, once you have one of these emulated versions running, they will almost never crash. And will run every time you come back to them! Trust me, if you want less troubles and more time just enjoying the game. Play one of these versions!

He has a good point about emulating being better option. PC version has memory leak which causes game to crash with 100% certainty depending how quickly you hit the memory limit. This combined with games save system makes it nightmare to play. And I dont think there is any way for fans to fix that. Despite all the issues in the game I enjoyed it.

What about the 4GB patch on PC?

The 4GB patch helps for sure. But having to use it is another reason why it's better to just emulate the PS3 version if you want to play on PC.

I have been able to get the PC version running really well and consistent without any crashes in my last play through. But it probably took me 6 hours of messing around. And the PS3 version is identical outside of the upgraded fan textures you can use with DPfix.

It's by far the easiest way to play an excellent version of the game. Doesn't take much horse power to run at 4k 60fps. If your PC can run the PC version at that resolution, it can almost certainly run the PS3 version at that too, but with a lot less hassle.

Heya, more than happy to try this out, but the version of RPCS3 you linked doesn't have the same options in the GPU menu to change things, also not sure how to import a config file into it as well. (Couldn't find it online, but I'm bad at Google Fu) Wondering if you could help out. Been trying to get this to run on my main rig for a long time, (weirdly runs on my laptop no issues.) but it has endless issues on the former and now it won't even boot passed the opening splash screen with all the dev logos, it just crashes to desktop. Thanks in advance.

Yeah my bad. I saved those settings after updating and not realizing it needed to be the older version. Here are the settings for that version -

(I updated the original post too)

Not sure you can import on that version but just copy these settings and you should be good. You may need to reduce the resolution scale under GPU if yours can't handle 60fps at 4K. But other than that these settings should run perfectly. You can also inject Reshade to add some better AA (I use SMAA and FAA) or other effects to improve IQ (I like chromatic aberration for one) too at no performance cost.

I included some screens of what mine looks like with my Reshade settings.

But you miss out on a great experience! Nothing like trying to fix a broken mess to play an amazing cult game.

lol, sure. But having to set up an emulator to play it captures some of that magic ;)

the days when pc gameing wasnt just about keyboards :agarth: it was about self modability and ability to do things our way. suppose we just gotta hope corpos have your low values in mind......corpos allways respect consumers ability to play things.. just look at vtmb works as intended

Not sure what your talking about, but getting an emulator running on a PC to play a game that has a broken PC port, seems pretty much in line with using a PC for "modability" purposes.

What a pointless guide... You could've saved me reading multiple paragraphs by saying the fix doesn't have anything to do with the Steam version at the top. Not everyone has the CPU to run PS3 emulation. I also don't own a copy, nor do I feel like looking for a pirated copy of a game I already own right here.

yup agree there boss, its out pc, we can do what we want with them, and originally the xbox360 version was the best version did not crash at all, not sure about ps3 version though i own it and played it, but pc version like silent hill homecoming, just does not agree with itself, ima try and lock it to 30fps and see if that helps or try 720p who knows right?

And yet it could save you hours of messing around and headache from trying to get the PC version running correctly. Any CPU decent enough to run Deadly Premonition is likely to have no problem running PS3 emulation at the same resolution.

What about the 4GB patch on PC?
What patch?
I just got this game last year, tried playing it, but it wouldn't recognize my controller properly, so I had to change things in big picture mode.
Then I ran into the crash after the car cutscene, and just gave up, because I tried so many options and researched so many methods of fixing before I even encountered the crash.

Say I were to start from scratch now, what steps should I get to be able to play this on my PC, with a controller, and no crashing?
