I thought it was interesting when there was a monster at one point, I was thinking... does this go deeper?? Whats happening? Is the mouthwash part of something bigger? How are they going to survive? Are they going to kill Curly? Who raped Anya?
You have to enjoy a good mystery and immerse in the world.
I stumbled upon it by reading up on I have no mouth and I must scream, was not sure, so I watched a playthrough, Welonz is my favorite, she just plays games, along with rookie mistakes without all the showmanship crap alot of them do, 5 minutes of watching I was yep, I'll like it, now if I could just figure out the centipede...
I have the novel, well actually a collection of stories by that author, I bought a bunch of books over the last few months from Amazon, if I could be like the poor dude from twilight zone that survived AND could have kept his glasses, Id wager i have enough to read non-stop for 5+ years straight, course, I'm distracted by my streaming and gameing, currently going through a Bioshock obsession.
Hey I'm just going to ask, that flipping centipede, I tried staring it down, I tried hiding, I tried avoiding looking at it, I tried outrunning it, nothing seems to be working so what am I missing?
Ok I'll give that a try, dang, didn't think of that one..
I am a casual gamer more interested in art and style, and I am so thankful for it every day. I will never be a dog conditioned to press the button for my nibble of bacon in an empty skinner box looking for epic lootz or watching build guides on YT.
As I said, I didn't find the story appealing as well as the fact that there was no game play is why I felt compelled to make this post. The whole thing was " I'm 16 and this is deep". Without the retro graphics I think it would really show how lacking the game really is.
While its sad its not for everyone, which was also the case back when one bought computer games in these neat little stores called Electronics Boutique, games were a crapshoot if you would like them or not, but I never had ANY bs with them at all, long as system requirements were followed on the back of the box. Back then Devs could just follow their vision and sell themselves.
I forgot about that one, talk about choice overload, I totally have to start over on that once i'm done Bio-shocking.
I also thought from playing through that the connection between the rape and the ship crash was not obvious and that there could have been other explanations for what happened. For example, a consensual encounter between Jimmy and Anya before the events of the game, followed by Jimmy going full Jack Nicholson. Anya would still be worried about her safety, she would still be panicking about her pregnancy, she still wouldn't want to give Jimmy's psych evals because she would be the first to know how unstable he was, etc.
If other plausible interpetations exist even after you untangle all of the hallucinations and the nonlinear storytelling, that's a good sign that the story was too vague. This game seems to really appeal to those who have been assaulted, those who work with victims, etc., as they will inevitably project their experience onto Anya and have confidence about the narrative. For other players, even those who pay close attention and finish in one sitting, you'll probably feel the game ends without addressing some major ambiguities and plot holes.
I enjoyed the surreal elements and unsettling atmosphere personally, but the story did not land and the gameplay was very weak. The only parts I thought benefited from being a game vs a movie were cutting a cake and the other analogous section.
hot take: jimmy is actually a really good character and shows how evil and sinful humans can be. hes a really compelling villain.
