A key to manually skip beats?
I haven't seen this suggested, and I'm not sure if it'd really be within the spirit of the gameplay to add an actual key for skipping a beat you don't wish to take action on, but I'd love to see this.

The reasons being that it can be very disorientating to use a combination of 2+ keys and making sure you don't have an item in the slot for it beforehand, or relying on a wall that you can't mine through to be beside you. Not to mention allowing beats to automatically skip by simply not pressing anything leaves you with reduced time to act for your next beat or two since you can act on beats a little earlier or later than they actually hit the center of the screen, which can also be disorientating.

Beat skipping is very helpful when you're surrounded in a way that would make your inability to move a life-or-death situation, or if you're speedrunning. There are already keys to both pause and quick-restart, so I don't see much of a problem with a key for skipping beats on command as well.

The key for skipping beats would have the same effect as skipping beats regularly already does (I.E losing current beat counter/coin multiplier, dying if you're Aria/Bolt, etc), it'd just remove the annoyance of having to wait out a beat and then immediately move twice to get back into the rhythm.

Sheesh, this is really difficult to explain without sounding stupid.

I know what you're talking about, but I think it would take away from the gameplay a little.
I like to think of this game loosely like a chess game, you HAVE to make a move :3

And there are a few items that do this, war drum, boots of leaping/lunging, holster.
Or you could just, not press anything

As Saxon said, a war drum can have you stay still, or simply switch weapons with a holster or turn something on/off to stay still

Or just move back and forth.

It's INCREDIBLY disorienting how late in the beat monsters move when you skip beats (e.g. with the ballet shoes, or when just being plain inept.)

I can't think of any logical way to combat that though.

It does that because the game is trying to hold off on moving to let you move until the last moment.

I Believe Domino wishes to have a button that is not pressing anything, so instead of having the game wait for the last possible second, you can say 'I Forfeit this beat' And the repercussions are as if you missed a beat.

No I think he means simply have a beat where it counts and you don't move, the enemies still do though, and you keep your multiplier, as if you used an item.

That would completely break the game and would be exploitable as hell (esp on Aria).
Which is why it exists as an item.

Indeed it would be, and I'll take it you're referring to the war drum?

Yep. I prefer the blood drum though. I guess you could also use the boots of lunging/leaping as well.

This is what I really meant. A key that you can press to make it as if you missed the beat, but so you can actually hit it DURING the beat to skip it, instead of waiting out the whole time needed for the game to automatically skip it.

Do you mean keeping your multiplier or not? If you keep the multiplier, then it's a bit bad.
Milk May 30, 2015 @ 4:50pm
Well the ballet shoes let you keep the multiplier regardless. As long as you don't get hit.

No, not at all. Like I (tried to) put in the OP, it'd have all the same consequences as if you 'missed' a beat in game, the only difference being that you could -call- the missed beat out before the time alloted for it runs out. So that would include losing the multiplier, except in special circumstances, for example:

Ahh, alright then. Well that's a fair enough explanation, then.
