Having trouble with controller configuration?
Hello everyone!

I've seen a couple reports about controllers having wonky mapping. Now that our team is slowly starting to return to the office, we've been able to test and troubleshoot with different controllers ourselves.

We have an Official NecroDancer Bindings configuration set up in Steam Input which should hopefully solve most of these issues now. If you have had issues with using a controller in the past, please make sure you have selected this input. Here's how:

1. Open Big Picture mode in Steam
2. Navigate to Crypt of the NecroDancer in your Library
3. Select Manage Game
4. Select Controller Configuration under Steam Input
5. Ensure that the configuration is set to Official NecroDancer Bindings by Brace Yourself Games

Conversely, if you don't like the official bindings, you can create your own bindings here as well.

This worked for the controllers we used on our end, but if you're still running into these kinds of issues with your controller, please let me know and I'll continue to explore fixes!

EDIT: An unintentional side effect from some attempted fixes was that previous controller set ups were overridden. I have reverted the controller options on our end so your controller mapping should not be overridden by Steam Input anymore, but please let me know if you're continuing to run into issues!

Hello! The issues with my controller actually began when I had this controller configuration, and I cannot change it back to the way it was before, the game does not let me input the bindings I'm setting for it. Thanks for the help in advance.

I solved it thanks to this article:)

The configuration introduced unintentionally had the following flaws:
The RB button and LB button of the XBOX ONE controller were not assigned to the loaded ”Official NecroDancer Bindings” setting. RB&LB is blank.

Please try to reference

Edit 2:

Even easier Fix for people whose controller settings broke because of this change:

Go to your Library, right click the game, go to Properties. At the bottom, there should be a setting called Steam Input Per-Game Setting. Change that to Forced Off. You should now be able to rebind your controls again in game.

Edit:

Fix for people whose controller settings broke because of this change:

Follow Steps 1,2,3 of the instructions above in the post itself.
Go to Controller Options
Change Steam Input Per-Game Setting to Forced Off
Exit Big Picture Mode

Whether you used Big Picture mode before or not should hopefully be irrelevant, you can now actually rebind in game again and it's not forcing the loadout into your game anymore.

As a bit of an unfortunate, to put it mildly, side effect of this fix, it kinda broke everything for me on a completely fine working setup. Even without using big picture mode, it forced this loadout to override my settings, including being unable to rebind anything. Considering there are no patch notes indicating anywhere that something with the game changed and knowing that the game was not being updated anymore,I did not search for a recent change on the game's end. Luckily, a discord user pointed me to this thread, at which point I managed to force turn off this loadout in big picture settings (which btw I never used big picture with this game so I also don't know why it loaded this in the first place) and rebind my controls again.

Summary: This probably broke more than it fixed for the average player and without communication in game via patch notes that alerts the player that something changed in this regard, it's very hard to figure out the source of that problem on your own.

I'd suggest either modifying this fix so it doesn't just automatically load and override the settings of anyone who doesn't have anything to do with the problems in the first place, or, if that's not possible, pushing patch notes into the game alerting people of the modification.

This is also clearly what TotalyNotKingSeekerFrampt (nice name btw) is experiencing, and the steps I had to go through are clearly non-trivial enough that a lot of people experiencing these new problems will not be able to fix that on their own. Yeah the more I think about this, the less okay I find this, sorry. You guys probably broke the game for a lot of people without really giving them a chance to figure out why.

Thanks for pointing this out! We definitely didn't intend for this to override anyone's settings - just to make it a clearer option for new players who have said they are struggling with controls. I will look into undoing these effects.

I am still having issues with the controller's on screen icons. I have now tried using both a switch controller and a ps4 controller in addition to my original xbox one controller. The problem is NOT in getting the controllers to work. Your response here and deleting my original post doesn't make the issue go away. I repeat. ALL CONTROLLERS FUNCTION BUT THE ON SCREEN ICONS REMAIN AS DEFAULT TEXT NO MATTER WHAT. I have tried being as nice and understanding as possible so far but to delete my post without addressing the issue in any way is disgusting and ingenuine. I am clearly not the only person posting about this issue and yet you continue to gloss over all of our complaints in spite of the issue being clearly communicated as it being about the ON SCREEN PROMPTS and not controller function. All I want to do is configure the controls to match what you have already implemented for the Switch and to have the correct on screen prompts to go with it. Please don't just delete this post and ignore this issue any longer. I've seen that people have been looking for a solution to this problem for at least TWO YEARS if not longer now.

Hi Jason! No one from our staff has deleted anything recently. I'm looking through the threads and I don't see any deleted posts from you, though I do see a live post regarding button icons in Bug Reports if that's the post you're talking about?

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we'll be able to get around to a visual fix for button icons in the near future as most of our developers are currently working on other projects at the moment, but I'll put it on the team's radar again!

While your issue is about the on-screen icons, there were several users who had issues with the actual controller configurations, and that it what this post is about.
