Ring of Shadows seems pretty UP...
I mean, everything for free hardly seems worth the extremely small sight range it gives you.

Or perhaps I'm just not seeing how great it is...

If you're careful, you can survive despite the vision, especially with a helm of telepathy. It's harder but you should just assume that all traps are dangerous and all enemies are their deadlier versions until proven otherwise. And it's not like you have to KEEP the ring of shadows; just steal 2-3 levels worth of free items and trade it for another ring (for free). 2-3 levels worth of every item in the shop is pretty good, especially at the start of the game, and if you see any good items after you give up the ring you should have plenty of spare funds left.

But the problem I keep running into is being unable to swap the ring after a while.

Because I feel like the run is a shoe-in grabbing the ring in the first shop, being able to steal all the blood trades and such, but being unable to find any other ring poses a problem frequently.

Are you playing single-zone mode? When I said you can usually get rid of it I was thinking Hard mode, where a ring of shadows in zone 1 or even zone 2 is a fairly safe bet.

I pretty much exclusively play hardcore, so I guess I'm just unlucky in getting another ring.
