How does local coop work?

Question is as the title states. I could find no meantion of this in the wiki or forums (was a quick skim). I'm getting the game, no question about that, but when my brother saw it was local coop, he got really excited to play together. I would rather tell him before hand if it turns out all local coop is is one player controls the character, and aniother just helps out, like in child of light. Thanks for the help.

No both players get a char and they play through the dungeon together. Totally equivalent roles for both players. Only thing is the BARD mode that is not rhythm based but turn based (monsters move when a player moves) and when playing with 2 players all enemies get a turn when either one player moves which makes it unplayable in co-op. You shouldn't have any problems with the other game modes.
