Worth it?
This looks so much like a game I should not get.

I don't like low res graphics. I don't like rythm games. I don't like twich games.

But two reasons say get it:

- I love Rogue (the original, which this looks like it has some similarities to)
- the very positive reviews

Don't like low res graphics, yet you love Rogue? It seems contradictory to me... :P

Rogue overcomes graphics issues.

This game is 100% a rhythm game. If you don't like rhythm games why would you buy a rhythm game

Based on your original post, I'd stay away.

This game is a total kickass, the overwhelming positive reviews are because it's:
- F**king fun.
- F**king dope.
- F**king difficult.

Of course you may not like it, but despite it's a rhythm game it's still kind of a rogue. I think, at least in a "spiritual" level, has a lot to do with Spelunly and Isaac. If you liked those, it's pretty sure you will love this one.

Is the DLC worth getting? Its just more songs right?

That depends on you... DLC it's a standalone soundtrack. Think about it more like an album, it's not in-game content.
let me tell you pros and cons i think you would care about
+AWESOME music, that once you get the hang of it makes the rhythm aspects almost ignorable at times.
+many playable characters, including one that removes the rhythm aspect.
+12 randomly generated levels each run
+Many bosses to fight
+Large item variety

*Similar to nuclear throne, and the binding of isaac.
*moddable
*use your own music
*a story mode spanning 3 characters that gets insane the further you go.

-A bit confusing at first
-Steep difficulty curve
-Really poor starting gear (as most characters)
-Most bonus characters give really unfair penalties to the game (no collecting money, resting, one hit, etc.)

OVERALL: rhythm games are usually hated for thier lack of depth. you will find no end to the depth of the rogue-like COTND. however, be prepared for a hard challenge.

Thanks for the replies, especially jdude330.

I should add to my list above, I don't like any 'chiptune' music, which is what the trailers sound like.

Game soundtracks I love are orchestral: thebest are Total Annihilation and Diablo II.

Is the game difficulty more about things like twitch movement, or more like Rogue where it's just difficult combat?

It's not about twitch movement, but it's not entirely like Rogue either. It's about moving to a beat and knowing how enemies move and the right way to face them. The music isn't chiptune, but if you don't like it, there are 4 other soundtracks you can choose from. And if you don't like any of them, you can even put in your own music!

"Low Res Graphics"

Dude there's a fine line between resolution and artstyle.

Well I'm gonna get it just because I want to see it given the especially positive reviews, the question now is the base $5 or the DLC $12.

It's hard to explain, but it's neither one or another, it's BOTH. It's about a rhythm control, which can be really frenetic and tachycardic in some levels and characters, but also about learning the patterns of your enemies. Dealing with one enemy it's easy, no matter how hard it is; the hard stuff is doing it when being surrounded by 4 enemies with different pattern movements, different attacks and having to keep the beat all at the same time.

About the music, the only thing alike chiptune is the Shopkeeper voice. Everything else goes from disco to metal.

Again, you may not like it, but it's hard to say that it's not the very best work of Danny B.
My favourite tracks are possibly the combo of the 2 Necrodancer themes when fighting him.

The game is absolutely worth it. The "low res" graphics as you call them could be called "lovingly crafted pixel art" by others, including me. If that gives you pause, I shudder to think of the awesome games you have missed out on. The game is amazing, to say the least. The random floor layouts, the enemies, the items, weapons, armor, progression and roguelike mechanics are stellar. The music is catchy and very well suited to the game. Plus, its on sale right now. I would go out on a limb and say that anyone that cannot get at least a minimum amount of enjoyment out of the game needs to find another hobby. And those that grew up with a Nintendo controller in their hands will be right at home.

But even with what i just said, i cant realy say it's a bad game. There is a most rad OST i ever heard, the characters concept, the atmosphere and the gameplay. But it's realy hard, if you beat this you deserve a medal.

The game isnt that hard. It takes practice but none of the enemies or traps are cheap or unfair.
