Encountering two cards

Just landed on a space which instructs me to draw two cards. I choose to encounter them. The first is a combat. I lost.
The second is the Goblin Slayer weapon - but the game will not let me take it.

In every other instance of drawing two cards as I recall - I always have to encounter both.

I've scoured the online manual but cannot find any rule telling me why I cannot take the object. It is left lying in the space I'm in. I definitely chose to encounter the cards when I drew them. I currently have no object cards and am not prohibited in any way from carrying them. Why is my only option to end my turn? Is it because I lost the combat on the first card? I find nothing in the rules to confirm this is so?

Yes, you have to win the combat to take the object

Okay thanks. If I'd had known this I'd have used one of my scout tokens to avoid combat with the monster in order to ensure I get the magic item. Oh well.
