Unreal Development Kit: Does not save map; Software crashes
I started to build a map. I saved this by saving. After I extended the map, I pressed the save button. The process was started but then the program closed. When I wanted to load the card it was faulty.
About Steam I checked the software for errors. 10 have been fixed. After that I was able to save the map once. Then I had the same problem again.
I googled for update options and bug fixes. I found nothing helpful.
After 2 days of unsuccessful search, I turn now to the community and ask for help.
Is there a solution I overlooked or did not find?

Are you building a map from the templates? if so, don't, use a new blank map.
Steam verify will always bring back missing files, so it won't fix anything.

Also make sure you only use " save current level" using the other save buttons will break the editor.

save current level and save as won't stuff the game up
i use the save as option as save current level is too close to the save all button?

how to stop template maps from crashing=
start a new map morning miday or night
make skydome smaller its too big
if level doesn't need sky delete it
delete the dinosaur head (fog is too big)
place a floor static mesh on the white floor
move the builder brush (red wire cube)
go to brush wireframe mode
delete the wire cube (blue or yellow colour)
go back to lit or unlit mode
delete the big white slab
at the top let corner go to view
select world properties
click blue arrow
select vcmymapinfo
open mymap info
set punchout handler to general
will see save setup its blank
click blue arrow and select
vcsavegamesetup

use save as to save your map in a new folder in the games mods folder
make sure there is no space in the udk file name

go to build option
build geometry=the white cube is deleted
build ai paths
build lighting=it might fail the 1st time
if it fails to build lighting
click on the swarm window
select its settings
right at the very top is a swarm cache directory path that is set to D drive!!
change the D to the drive letter that VCD is installed on=usually its C drive
save its settings
build the lights again if it fails do it again and it won't fail
save map again
exit level editor
Start level editor and load your new map=
hooray it doesn't crash on load

if ya saved a template map before doing that=
delete the udk file that is crashing and do the above to fix it

alternative=sub to circle of doom and modify that map and save it under a new name
exit editor and load it again n load the new one and work of that map=you need to setup world properties again in a copy of that map
the bonus is it has a floor ceiling and bin n bucket machine and a few lights already setup to give you a head start:)

if game is broken and editor or game crashes
create a backup of all your mods files
open Viscera folder (keep the saves folder)
delete everything else=empty viscera folder with a saves folder in it (so you don't lose your office collection)
in steam library select VCD
properties
local files
verify game cache
wait for steam to reinstall the game
Start level editor n let the 1st run setup do its thing
make a map from the choices above
using a blank template map is harder and its anoying setting up the kill z so it doesn't kill the janitor???
the other template maps are easy to setup

only save your new map with save current level and save as buttons
if swarm crashes set the d to a c again after reinstall of game:)

note that verify game cache is useless=
(10 files missing=still broken)
unless you delete the problem file/s 1st as steam skips corrupt files:)
100+ files missing=now steam will fix it:)

tip of the day=
at the bottom right corner of the level editor is a save box untick it to disable autosave=it lag spikes the editor and randomly crashes the editor when it autosaves or it jolts what your trying to place half way across the screen=drives you crazy=very anoying!!
the boxes nex to that are useful
set the scale box as low as it goes and untick the box
set the rotation box to 90 or 45 for now as those are the most used rotation settings
set the grid box as low as it goes so meshes don't jump across the screen=it easier to join walls floors etc together
ctrl + end also helps alignment mesh to grid and helps with seemless mesh joining so it doesn't Flickr or have gaps in the meshes
no gaps=welder won't send fire stains outside the level where the mop can't reach em:)

never press the red button next to the gren play button or it break the editor so never press emulate mobile features button!!
enable realtime sound=its one of the sound icons at the top near the play(pie) button
that will fix the sound not working bug so the sound won't stop working when ya press the pie button and it won't go pop anymore (bug stops all sounds on pc from working)
realtime sound fixes the sound bug permanently:)
then ya won't have to exit and restart the editor 6000 times to get the sound back:)

In the templates are very many objects in the way. How can I get them marked quickly? With Ctrl I can add only one object at a time. Is there a specific button to mark a section for deletion?

@A Janitor I am a beginner at UDK and learn it through Youtube tutorials. If I get all the settings is doubtful, but I'll try later. Therefore, I searched for the map "circle of doom" but the workshop showed your "Station 7" map. Probably because there is the reference to this card in the text. I have now subscribed to this card and only need to search it on my SSD. An easy way to select many objects at once to delete them is missing.

Just use File > New map, then select blank map.
If you have started already, you will have to make it again, but this time using blank map it shouldn't crash anymore.

Verwenden Sie einfach Datei> Neue Karte und wählen Sie dann eine leere Karte aus.
Wenn Sie bereits begonnen haben, müssen Sie es erneut tun, aber dieses Mal sollte es mit einer leeren Karte nicht mehr abstürzen.

station 7 was made from circle of doom
that was when there was no guide or tutorial=erm what's udk=
i looked at the editor thinking wtf is this and how the hell do i build a map?
back then i didn't know how to setup a blank map or how to fix the broken template maps???
the best thing to do is read BlackEagle's level creation guide
look at all the official maps in the level editor to see how stuff is setup
sub to a small workshop map and look at the world properties mymap info settings
to see how thats setup
its hard to find video tutorials
look at the videos enex posted in the workshop forum under
vcd mapping tutorial
i wish there was that much help when i started modding
there was no help when i started so i Winged it/wild guess it:)
I started modding VCD the day it got a level editor in an ancient game update:)

important=
have fun and take your time=you will master it it in no time:)
get stuck=ask loads of questions:)

for me i just wing it now and look back on the guide occasionally for reference:)

perhaps fodder can explain how to setup the blank map
cuz for a beginner placing the 1st mesh and the base actors is a headache=was easier to fix the broken day miday n night maps

to select more than 1 actor hold Ctrl and left click on something
while still holding ctrl click on something else

here is a quick template map i made from the night template map in the last 2 hours:)
all its basic settings are setup and ready to go
template map is also a fully playable level
it includes a light function material from penumbra to setup a light that fades in and out too

feel free to use the dropbox template map to make a new map or modify it into a new one:)
now that saves loads of time messing around with the day miday/night/morning/afternoon and blank template maps=or swearing at the editor when the existing templates crash on ya or when the blank map constantly keeps killing the janitor with the kill z setup!

so go forth n have fun in the level editor:)
rename NewMap.udk to name of whatever you want to call it
no space in its name:)

now i dont have to mess with the templates now that i just made one=a big time saver:)
map in the dropbox link is a much better template map than circle of doom is

@cannonf0dder @A Janitor thank you very much for your help.
I was once able to assemble things together in CATIA, so I should also learn how to use this software ^^. At first I thought that this should be easier but it is the other way round. It is more difficult as CATIA has been adapted more intensively for the customer.
The language barriers and the fact that I'm not a programmer make it harder for me to know what someone means. The visual learning method, where I imitate what the Youtuber is doing immediately is the best learning method for me. What else is there for the break button ^^. Transferring the learned to my ideas is then usually easy. Important is just that I get to know the tools of the software and then mess with them. But if I can not save, then I do everything in vain.

It is currently working with the save current Level. I want to try this next time with a new map. You can choose that right at the beginning.
