READ THIS: Frequently Asked Questions; Answers!
In the interests of sanity and sanitation company policy, here is a growing list of frequently asked questions and answers you can refer to for quick reference.

Q: I'm looking for info on the game, a wiki. Do you have one?
Yes we do! An excellent community made wiki by STARRYSOCK and many other helpful folks, check it out here: http://viscera-cleanup-detail.wikia.com/wiki/Viscera_Cleanup_Detail

Q: Can I try the game before buying it?
Yes you can! A free version of Viscera Cleanup Detail (early alpha prototype) is available for download from Indie DB: Indie DB - VCD Demo
Just be aware that it's incredibly crude and lacks most of the improvements and fixes made since.

Q: I have bought your game on Humble, how do get my Steam Key?
Be sure to check your Humble store page and try the "Key Re-sender"[www.humblebundle.com] or contact Humble Support if you can't find your key.

Q: I have already bought Santa's Rampage on Steam, and or I have the Shadow Warrior version, do I get a discount?
You no longer receive a discount on the main Viscera Cleanup Detail game for purchasing Santa's Rampage, sorry.

There is also no discount for having Viscera Cleanup Detail: Shadow Warrior; it is only a free bonus given with purchases of Shadow Warrior or the full Viscera Cleanup Detail.

Q: I'm thinking of buying your game, or buying one of the addons\spin-offs, what do I get for it, how do they come together?

If you buy the main Viscera Cleanup Detail game on Humble, or buy it here on Steam, you get both Santa's Rampage and VCD: Shadow Warrior for free!

Along with the spin-offs all wrapped up in the main game, you also get separate standalone versions of VCD:SW and VCD:SR, allowing you to play coop with those who only have the standalone versions.

House of Horror and The Vulcan Affair are paid DLCs, and you need to buy them along with the main game.

Q: Ok, I've bought your game through the Humble Widget, how do I actually get it?

You should receive an email with links to the DRM-Free download, and you will also receive Steam keys to the Viscera Cleanup Detail, VCD:Shadow Warrior and VCD: Santa's Rampage games on Steam!
Be sure to check your email and the Humble store page.

If you still don't get the key, then use the "Key Re-sender"[www.humblebundle.com] or contact Humble Support if you can't find your keys.

Q: What is the 'aim' of the game, what are your objectives?

Your objectives are your own, make of it what you will!
The company, that you as a janitor are employed by, may not look kindly on incompetence, but no trends were ever set by doing what others wanted! Be a rebel! Do some painting!
If however you have an OCD itch, be sure to scratch it by cleaning up, and not by scratching yourself.
The only rule is: "There are no rules", which is technically a rule, but no matter.

Q: Can I monetize videos and or footage of VCD on YouTube, etc?

Yes, yes you can, affirmative, certainly, if you wish, indeedlington, indubitably so.

Q: I've got a bug\error\crash\complaint\suspicious itch to report, where do I go?

You can post here on the Steam forums, or you can post your thoughts or bug reports on our forums over here: Viscera Forums[www.runestorm.com]

We read everything, so we'll respond and help whenever possible.

Q: The game crashes with an "UnSetup.exe has stopped working" error, help!??

Don't panic, keep a safe distance and follow these steps:

(1): Download and install .NET framework 4.5 manually from the official microsoft website: Microsoft .NET framework 4.5[www.microsoft.com]

(2): Try launching the game again, if it should attack you once more, then download this file: Automatic EULA accept App[dl.dropboxusercontent.com]

(3): Place the file under "\Binaries\" in your main game folder, run it then click on "Accept EULA" and then "Yes".

(2): Try launching the game again, if it should attack you once more, then try running the "\SteamApps\Common\Viscera\Binaries\UnSetup.exe" file as admin.

(3): If that doesn't work, open a Run box (Windows-R), clear the path, and drag UnSetup.exe into it. Then type "/eula" as an argument and run it.

(4): Launch the game and pray to your god or gods.

Q: Upon launching the game through Steam, it installs .Net, crashes, restarts my computer and then repeats. What do I do!?

Try manually installing .Net 4.5 from the Microsoft website: Microsoft .NET framework 4.5[www.microsoft.com]

Also delete, or cut the "dotNetFx40_Full_setup.exe" from the game's "Binaries\InstallRedist\" folder.

After you've done that, try launching the game. Probably best to do this right after it has been downloaded, and before it's run for the first time.

You can find more info here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/255520/discussions/0/792923684163401247/

Q: When I try launching the game on Steam, it starts, then goes black or closes a moment later. I don't even see any log files in the game folder, what is it doing?

You can try fixing this issue by finding the "UDKGame/Config/UDKSystemSettings.ini" file in your game's install folder under SteamApps/Common/Viscera.

Once you have the file open(in Notepad for example), make sure the ResX, ResY, and Fullscreen settings are set correctly for your system.

If it should fail, try it with fullscreen set to false.

This could also be a problem with the Steam install not always installing the required prerequisites. Try running the UE3Redist.exe file under the game's "Binaries\Redist\" folder.

If that doesn't help, you may have to download the core ones from the Microsoft website:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-za/download/details.aspx?id=40784
Be sure to install the one appropriate for your system(32bit[x86], or 64bit).

If that still doesn't work, try manually installing .Net 4.5 from the Microsoft website: Microsoft .NET framework 4.5[www.microsoft.com]

Q: When I try launching the game, it starts, then crashes a moment later. The Log file complains of "Assertion failed: i>=0 && (i<ArrayNum||(i==0 && ArrayNum==0)) "

This seems to be a problem with the Steam install not always installing the required prerequisites. Try running the UE3Redist.exe file under the game's "Binaries\Redist\" folder and launching the game again.

If that doesn't work, try manually installing .Net 4.5 from the Microsoft website: Microsoft .NET framework 4.5[www.microsoft.com]

Q: My game's settings refuse to save, why does it hate me so?

Sometimes this is a special case issue, so we advise you to ask for help specifically.

Q: The game crashes on me(Built With UDK Has Stopped Working), often complaining of "Direct3DDevice->CreateVertexShader" gibberish in the log file, what do I do!!!?

Chances are you will need to update your video drivers, search for your video card manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for your card.

Q: The dark gods conspire to slow the game's FPS to a snail's pace, what will remove this curse?

Fortunately no sacrifice is needed, you can instead try restarting your computer first.

If that doesn't work, try adjusting the settings in the options menu. Failing that, find the UDKSystemSettings.ini file in your game's "\UDKGame\Config\" folder.
Try setting some of these values to false and then launching the game again:

Bloom=false DynamicLights=False DynamicShadows=False MotionBlur=False bAllowLightShafts=false LensFlares=False FogVolumes=False bAllowD3D9MSAA=False AmbientOcclusion=False MaxMultiSamples=0

You can also try manually running the Unreal Engine 3 redistributables installer for the game and then launching again; you can find the "UE3Redist.exe" in the game's "\Binaries\Redist\" folder, that's the one you need.

If that doesn't help, you may have to download the core ones from the Microsoft website:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-za/download/details.aspx?id=40784
Be sure to install the one appropriate for your system(32bit[x86], or 64bit).

Also consider updating your video drivers, and Direct X manually should none of the above work for you.

In some cases this can also be a PhysX issue. Check to see that "bDisablePhysXHardwareSupport" is set to False in the "\SteamApps\Common\Viscera\UDKGame\Config\UDKEngine.ini" file.
You can open it up in Windows Notepad. Search for the value mentioned above and make sure it's set to false, then save the file.

Q: My game crashes, or becomes black, or minimizes every time I try to change the Window Mode setting, what do I do?

You can likely fix this issue by finding the "UDKGame/Config/UDKSystemSettings.ini" file in your game's install folder under SteamApps/Common.

Once you have the file open, make sure the ResX, ResY, and Fullscreen settings are set correctly for your system.

If that doesn't help, try installing these drivers from the Microsoft website:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-za/download/details.aspx?id=40784
Be sure to install the one appropriate for your system(32bit[x86], or 64bit).

Q: My screen has purple or other weirdly coloured blocks on it, and/or some manner of ghostly imprints of other screens! Help me, please!?

These two are sometimes caused by the Bloom effect. Try turning Bloom off in the Options Menu.

If that doesn't work, chances are it's a video card/drivers issue. Make sure your video drivers are up to date and that nothing is faulty.
See here for more info.

Q: I've "run out of video memory"? Say what! What is this mess?
Sometimes VCD can use quite a lot of memory, here are some common fixes to resolve the issue. Try them in order.

(1): Increase Virtual Memory
1. Open command prompt with Administrator rights. To do this, go to Programs, Accessories, right-click on Command Prompt and select “Run as Administrator.” 2. Enter the following at the prompt and press enter: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072 3. Close the prompt and restart the computer.

The default is 2048, so if anything goes wrong or other things stop working, repeat the process and instead enter 2048, or use:
bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa

(2): Decrease Texture Detail
Find and open the following file(in Windows notepad for example), "SteamApps\Common\Viscera\UDKGame\Config\UDKSystemSettings.ini" Search for "TextureGroup" On each line you'll see a "MaxLODSize" value, reduce it to 2048 or maybe even 1024. Do that for the following texture groups: -TEXTUREGROUP_World -TEXTUREGROUP_Specular -TEXTUREGROUP_Normal

(3): Install .Net 4.5

Try manually installing .Net 4.5 from the Microsoft website: Microsoft .NET framework 4.5[www.microsoft.com]

Q: I want to play co-op, but my friend simply can't connect no matter what we do, how does it work!!??

The current version of Viscera Cleanup Detail on Steam supports joining through steam.

On the Main Menu you will find a list of games (when there is at least 1 game) hosted by your friends, there you can click the desired friend to join the game they are in. Easy!

Invites are not currently supported, we don't recommend trying that way.

If none of that works for you, and you have a 64bit system. Try running the game in 64bit first.

Also, consider uninstalling these two bits of software if you have them:
Nvida Geforce Experience
Killer Network
They have been found to cause issues for some people.

If you still cannot connect, then perhaps try joining the old-fashioned way:

---------------------------

If you are attempting to host a game for a friend online and you are connected to the internet through a router to the outside world, you as the game's host may need to forward the game's unique 'Port' number.
Information about port forwarding can be found on your Router manufacturer's website, or here[portforward.com]; Make sure that you forward ports 7777, 7778 (Game) and 27015, 27016 (Steam).

Once the ports are forwarded, you must know your public IP-Address, you can do this by visiting: http://www.whatismyip.com/
Give this number to your friend, and ask him to enter or paste it into the connect box in-game.

If all else fails, follow the Steam Bypass steps found in this thread: Steam Bypass[www.runestorm.com]

Q: I just saw items flicker on the floor and then vanish, I am freaking out!! Do they count against me getting a proper clean?

Nope. Flickering items that vanish do not count against you cleaning up, only the absence of certain items will have an affect, so don't worry. Instead we propose that you enjoy the psychedelic trip it provides and then go about cleaning up once more, free of worry.

Q: I'm more or less absolutely completely sure that I have cleaned up the entire place, even after searching every corner with the sniffer, but I keep getting notes in the Janitor's Office, what am I missing?

There is a rare chance of items getting stuck in the floor (not flickering), this can sometimes cost you a full cleanup, this problem is a result of physics engines always finding a way to sneak through your best defenses, making it difficult to fix, so for now you have three choices:

-You can either try opening the game's console with the '~' key, typing KillNearestMess a few times and then see if that worked.
-Or, given that the game has a "bonus task" system, you can offset any damage by filling the stacking areas properly, and also by filling in paperwork on the "Punch-o-matic" more accurately.
-Or, you'll just have to clean again.

Q: What is the disturbing looking third weapon? The cyan protruding thing? What do the two colors mean, what does it do!!??

The "Sniffer" is used to detect subtle messes scattered around the map that you may have missed.
When in 'Blue Mode' it detects blood, viscera, and other such biological mishaps, including soaked buckets.
When in 'Green Mode' it detects trash, casings, broken things, and other objects that need to be destroyed or cleaned.
The sniffer will beep faster and faster the closer you get to a mess, keep a keen ear out for its subtle changes in pitch when you are looking for messes you've missed.

Q: I've filled the buckets and bins with all the messes, does this count as having cleaned up?

No, you also need to burn it all, yes even the water buckets, the laws of physics are a bit bendy when janitors are on the job. Free your mind!
Once everything has burned away, and you've left nothing else messy around, you will have technically cleaned up.

Q: This game is cruel, why oh why why WHY did you make limbs come out of the machines!??? I had just cleaned everything and now it's ruined!

Cleaning is not easy in real life, nor should it be in a game about cleaning up far far worse debacles.
A Space-Janitor must be tough, ruthless and have a certain penchant for suffering to get through his day, the company can't afford the best, so a janitor must make do with faulty and cruel equipment.
After all, that's what the game is really about; piling problems on you until you solve them on your own.
Your cleaning must be a grueling and unrewarding task, especially punished for your carelessness.
That, and I guess we're just evil.

Q: I can't save my game, does the game have a save feature?

The latest versions and onward support saving!
A Save button on the mid-game menu will allow you to keep saves of your cleaning status.
There is also an autosave.

The Start Work menus have a save list which will allow you to select a save file to load.

Q: I've punched-out from my cleaning and been taken to an Office of sorts, what is this?

Punching out from cleaning is a final choice, upon doing so you are taken to the Janitor Office where your success and or failure will be printed out in the form of post-event news.
Each news article relates to a specific failure on your part, if you see an article about something in the office, you missed the related item!

As we develop this system, more variations will be added.

You now also receive a "Debriefing", which is a quick indication of your performance, and also an insight into your likely state of mind thereafter.

Q: I want to make some levels for Steam Workshop using the level editor, but how does it work?
