WildTangent Response - FATE Has stopped working issue
Greetings from WildTangent!

***UPDATE***
The latest update to FATE appears to have fixed this bug across the board. Please update FATE and your game should work just fine. Bonus: Your saves don't appear to have been corrupted, so for those of you that put in 5 hours of gameplay and hit this bug, you can resume your dungeon crawling.

Thank you all for your patience!
***END OF UPDATE***

First, I want to apologize for the problems some of you have been experiencing. As a gamer myself, there's little that leaves me as frustrated as buying a game and not having it work. The team and I are looking into this to try and isolate the problem and reproduce it, so that we can fix it and get you all playing FATE again as quickly as possible. We did test FATE on Steam on Windows 7 & 8 with 32- and 64-bit systems, and this issue didn’t appear for us prior to launch.

Second, I want to apologize to everyone for the delay in any kind of "official" response. I didn't want to come on the forums and post a bland "we're looking into it ..." message without some kind of helpful update as to what's really going on. So here is what is really going on at WildTangent right now:

  • We have been reading ALL your messages and all the troubleshooting you've been doing on your own. It's been extremely helpful, so THANK YOU, particularly to the folks that have been offering suggestions and advice to other players.

  • We have finally gotten this to happen for us in our test harness that we can now use to try and track down the culprit. Unfortunately, the 'bad' save data we got is loading just fine on a debug build, so this may take a bit to really figure out.

What we would like to get from you, our players:

If you have this crash, please post in this thread the following information:

1) OS version, Service Pack, and 32/64 bit.
2) Network connection
3) Installation location for FATE (default for Steam, or do you have a custom location?)
4) exact steps that led to the problem. (eg, "The game loaded fine, I started playing, I saved/exited, and now the game fails on startup with a runtime error")
5) exact description of the error. I realize that "a Runtime error occurred" is a pretty generic message, but I want to ensure that you're all seeing the SAME error.

Please post those messages to this thread, and that will allow us to keep all the data in one place as we work to solve this issue.

I do not currently have an ETA for when this will be fixed, unfortunately. As soon as we have isolated the problem and have a build that we can test internally, I will let everyone know. This is not what any of us (gamers or developers) wanted for the launch of FATE on Steam, and the team and I will do our best to get this bug squashed in a hurry so that you can all get back to playing FATE.

Again, you have my sincere apologies for all of this, and I promise you we are working to get this fixed, tested, and updated as fast as we absolutely can.

1. Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1
2. High Speed
3. Default Steam
4. Originally I was having the issue where the game wouldn't load. Now it seems to work fine, but I am getting the "echoing sounds" glitch. Will try loading the game again now and see what happens.
5. Originally the runtime error, but now I am receiving no error message, as the only issue is the sounds echoing.

As stated above, my only issue now is the sound echoing... it's quite distracting >_<

and for me as well
Alright guys, I got it to work!!!!!! First complete a re-install. Then go to the Fate.exe. If you don't know where that is, than it's located in the common folder in your steam apps folder. Once you found it, open the properties menu and uncheck the following.... under compatibility uncheck the box. Don't try and use any type of compatibility settings. Than under that is the settings box, only check the last two boxes. Which enables skydrive filss and run as admin. I have windows 8.1 and so far the games is running fine after these changes. I hope this helps!!!!!

I run Windows 7, and for me the latest patch fixed everything EXCEPT the echoy sounds. Oddly enough, I chose to run in compatability mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3, and now it works fine! No sound echoes at all!
1. Windows 7 SP1 64-bit
2. Normal LAN (wired) connection to ADSL modem.
3. D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\FATE
4. Game has never worked :( crashes on startup
5. I only get normal "Fate has stopped working. A problem caused program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if solution is available." message. No other messages.
Awesome iBazly!!!!! Glad it worked for you. I was just posting how I got the game to work for me, running Windows 8.1.

So...how do you "update" a game that is supposed to automatically update? I re-installed the game and all that, and it still won't even boot up. It crashes immediately. I've tried all settings, everything mentioned on the forums. I have the normal Windows 7 updated and all that. I haven't had this much trouble with any other game for a long time. Any info on how to "update" in Steam would be appreciated!
iBazly 14. Dez. 2013 um 16:02
Hmm... mine did it automatically... :/. I'm not sure, sorry!

I really would like to play this game at some point! I have no idea what else to do to get it to work...
Thank you for the VERY awesome response. I already have the game (bought it when it originally came out) but will be getting it on Steam soon as I have some funds available. Thanks for giving a crap about this game and its community...it's actually refreshing to see someone care about a great game like this, especially so long after the original release.
I don't know where this supposed update comes from in a system that automatically updates and there's no record of anupdate happening that I see? Help? Please?

After updating to thw windows 8.1 My game appears to have issues with the colors. Not sure the reasoning or how to fix....it appears like it is in 3d now though and is not playable. Any ideas? Thanks
iBazly 15. Dez. 2013 um 17:19
Generally if there is a colour issue, the easiest thing to do is to kill explorer before running the game. To do this, first make sure you have the Steam window open, or make sure you can easily navigate to it WITHOUT your toolbar, as we are about to turn it off. Go to the task manager. In "Processes" find "explorer.exe". Right click it and hit "End Process". Then play the game!

When you are done, open the task manager again. Hit "File" and "New Task (Run...)" and type in "explorer.exe". This should re-open explorer! If it doesn't, you may just have to restart your computer - explorer should always open up automatically.

I'm not sure if this will work, as I've never heard of anyone having this issue with Fate. But generally, when a game isn't properly displaying colours, that's the easiest fix. Let me know if it works, I'm actually quite curious.
