Genes: what are the unlock conditions?

I wouldn't post normally, but I'm tired of searching and finding no answers.

I've seen people post "guides" saying to use genes, but the genes are not unlocked by default and no amount of repeated failure is unlocking them.

Does anyone know the conditions for unlocking the genes? I do not enjoy feeling like I do not know what to do in order to progress in this game, and it's really beginning to feel like a rip off to pay for something and not be able to access but the tiniest fraction of it.

I have been unlocking them for completing Casual, I would guess that winning unlocks a random gene regardless of difficulty. Though I just started playing as well.

Any winning playthrough unlocks a gene. If you want a formula that will semi-reliably win for bacteria, I can give you one.

I think the fastest way would be to play casual with the Neurax Worm, infect everyone, work up to Transcendence (it's at the upper left), save before using Transcendence, use Transcendence, then boom! everyone will become worm slaves in a few seconds. No need for killing off everyone.
Then load and repeat until you get all the Genes.
Neurax Worm has trojan planes to take care of those pesky islands (I'm looking at you Greenland)

From what I can tell this doesn't unlock the special genes from plagues with their own sets. You have to win with those plagues to unlock their genes.
