I've tried all the different compatibility options, but the best I seem to be able to achieve is a plain black screen with a white mouse cursor. The game is completely locked at that point and I can't easily alt tab out, I have to have task manager on the second screen to be able to close it again. Any advice would be super welcome!...

There's a level in Tanu Uprising Campaign where you get a "Heavy Assault Team". DON'T USE IT. You'll get crushed. Plus nearly all of them can't shoot the flying Sen-Soth you'll encounter. Send everyone to a bottom corner near the open farmland. Set game speed to MAXIMUM. Hide there for 3-5 minutes. "Reinforcements" will arrive. Change game back to your preferred speed.
