Talking to the npcs in important, so in every room type "talk" into the bar. It will give you the NPCs that are present and then you just have to type "talk (npc name)". For instance writing "talk totem" in the room 2 up from the starting room will begin the first quest. You can always review these controls with the controls button in the bottom left....
