I really liked that one a lot. Even Armies of Exigo was not bad being more or less a Warcraft clone but still quite enjoyable.
Thanks for remembering me on Knights of Honor. It was kinda like a mix of Stronghold and Cossacks. I never owned that one though, just rented it from a friend, played it a while and changed back to other games.
well to me act of agresion is a no go, i tloko sboring, goo..looks simplistic, and etherium reminds me of sup com but it is super wattered down, to the point of meh...not wanting it much...I wont buy an RTS just because its an rts, it has to offer to me some value...and frankly I see no game out there that does that to any degree, thats why I will wait after release and judge it then.
I used to love knights of honor played it mainly in camping + the soundtrack was amazing!
I dont see where Act of Aggression is a no go, theres barely any information about it, apart that it shares similarities with Wargame in terms of line of sight for example. But if thats not your style of strategy then thats also a subjective taste. Some prefer medieval or fantasy rts games. I wouldnt call grey goo simplistic. I watched enough footage and it kind of is like a mix of C&C and Starcraft. It is still fast paced but far from being like a Starcraft pace because micromanagement was reduced. Point is, there are no builder units, which takes away alot of micro. But that doesnt mean its simplistic. C&C never had builder units, had ressource gatherer but you didnt do anything with those aswell. So it is kinda the same principle. Just added with some details to buildings and hiding units=strategy.
Etherium, hm dont know. I nfact it reminds me more of a SciFi real time version of Endless Legend at the moment. So i cant really judge it. Out of these 3 its the most curious for me. But it seems to be alright.
Well act of agression to me is a no go due to the "contemporary" theme, I was never interested in those, nor ww2 games, thats why coh got boring to me after a while (aand due to the go out and chase for bases factor), I called grey goo simplistic mainly due to the quite boring upgrade system, ...you can make a unit invisible, or marginally change thir stats, and thats about it, +, _ 1 of 2 changes....after playing sup com that years ago there was not a single RTS ofa scalle that would come close to it...in the number of unit variety, tactics, scale of maps, defences....heck I would even like grey goo a lot more if they had some shield system....somehtign to add a little bit more to the basic units/ defensive walls/ turets system, that prety much no other games expanded upon....yes I like turtling, then rushing in after a succesful defence ;)
Overall I think RTS genre is declining due to the fact that people are gettign more and more stupid....thers no other wya of putting this, there are unfortunetly a lot more brainless FPS fans out there than proper rts fans....heck even sup com 2 got dumbed down to fit the consoles...as such it was not what sup com 1, and fa fans liked...I mean i like dht eimproved visuals, and all, but the experimental unit spam, and shield mechanics..heh..it felt wattered down...but I would still play it vs lets say starcraft 2 ..which to me was a game I got bored with after a week or 2....it just felt simpistic, and narrowminded....both visually (no camera zoom out) and it felt like a FPS player's rts, aka skill, tactics and thinking was not key to wining a match, but buid order memorization, and clicks per minute...all nonsence....I like games that reward experimentation, or unconventional aproaches...and sup com /fa were the last real RTS games to me.
We can see what happens when this changes. With Kickstarter and Steam being popular, Indiegames raising as very popular aswell, a game like Planetary Annihilation had a huge userbase. Many people bought that game, it was finally one RTS that got this spotlight.
So, i think these are 2 major factors, the genre became to small to be seen very much. It missed the time to get spotlight and so went under and was just ignored while franchises in other genres got the attention. This was caused because the number of quality RTS games just got less and less during the years. So many studios that were big and producing games like build up strategy, RTS or Citybuilder just went down. I remember Topware, Shiny, Sierra, Westwood to just name a few that are non existant anymore. Other were just overtaken by publishers and then destroyed, others changed their focus to swim with the wave of the big publishers, like Bullfrog. Lionhead Studios is one of the last ones.
About the games coming now:
I agree kind of, but i dont see the points you take as negatives. But thats subjective. It also is a point of preference. Some "RTS" players like it to be fast paced, but it seems the majority isnt so much into that kind. You could now say that SC2 has a huge userbase, but theres also not much of an alternative.
Im btw also one of the turtleing players in RTS. BUT i dont feel the need to just use one strategy to win. In the end im a strategy player. Grey Goo seems to be simplistic, you are right, there are no special abilities or many upgrades. Every faction has upgrades to change the units, but ofcourse the "depth" isnt so much there as in lets say Starcraft in terms of what every unit could do. But at the same time i see that as a strength. The micromanagement is reduced very much to focus more on what is important. The combat strategy. And i have seen enough real gameplay footage to be sure they can deliver possibilities.
But i also see that many who have played it think its a very good game, but not incredible.
I think it can fulfill what it wants to be. Deliver a good bunch of hours (30+) of fun in a good RTS. Its from the Devs of C&C (partially) so i have hope. And if it is successful, it may get a following game and they go on enhancing it. I see it as a basic rts game i can enjoy and have a chance to get fun out of. It must not be the best RTS possible.
I dont lose anything as i see it. I have the chance to get a good RTS experience (if the price is ok). I can still return to good old games if i am getting bored, but it may also turn out incredible.
For Act of Aggression, the only thing i dislike from the theme is the classical "US is good guys, others are bad guys" theme. Thats what i hate aswell. But besides that i love having some good tankfights, mixed with infantry and helicopters of modern warfare. Mixed with some futuristic elements (like jetpack troops or stealth/cloaked units or something like that).
I pretty much loved C&C Generals, this is getting close enough to it. I just dislike the classical role. I would have liked the theme more with having Alliance vs others. But thats not a major issue.
Act of War: Direct Action might be an RTS game for you. It's very similar to Command and Conquer Generals, set in our modern world with some future technology mixed in. It's was released in 2005 though and Steam unfortunately pulled it from their shop
I have to dig out that sometime.
Agreed, those twitch "rts"'s arent really real RTS's just click speed testers lol....TO me real RTS's are about tactics, strategy, both long term and short term + positioning, and manouverability / research and resource management.
I hope this will change with future releases. I set high hopes into Grey Goo and Etherium aswell in Act of Aggression. Those may not be the perfect games then (we dont know yet) and they may not be for everyone (as Devastator made clear), but we should see it this way:
Those games are delivering less micromanagement and slower paced Strategy. The more games like these are released, the more the focus is changed on RTS Games generally. The chance raises that if they are getting a majority and more popular again, new ones are made and we can say good bye to Stacraft-like RTS Games and have a more diverse market in the genre again with many different choices.
I dont think Starcraft is bad per se. I just would like to have alternatives, but there is none really.
Thats why the type of RTS that Starcraft represents became so influential, it had kind of a monopoly of new RTS Games during the last years because no new RTS Games were coming out showing it differently. And those coming out are like SC2 because they wanted a piece of the cake.
Thats how i see it.
what annoys me about Starcraft 2 is the default game speed for the game is set to fastest, which basically shortens all the productions times, movement times and everything by about 3/4 that's the actual game-play we see on twitch, play Sc2 and turn game-speed to normal before you play a skirmish the game changes entirely to an alright RTS.
it kinda make sme wonder did blizzard have any faith in their RTs normal game-speed or are they that scared nobody would watch SC2 at a normal/ slower pace.
on the subject of the act of series by eugen, act of aggression is a sequel/spiritual successor to act of war Direct action/high treason.
seriously the bad guy is the consortium from the first game with task force talon's replacement basically fighting them.
