when games become work.
Problem is, that SC2 is widely the only RTS left, other developers creating RTS games are looking at them trying to do the same instead of doing a real RTS with slower pace. They want to be famous and getting the next twitch livestream RTS.
Problem is, when you focus on getting an audience made of pro gamers, you will have not a wide audience. Next problem is, just replicating an RTS with taking what other RPS games do doesnt make a good RTS game.
Thing is, many players tend to either not like basebuilding entirely, or they prefer a more slower paced rts with more basebuilding. RTS was once popular with slower paced ones. Also RTS was better mixed. I remember when RTS was a big genre, games like Sacrifice and Knights and Merchants did interesting and good things (although im not sure if KaM can be counted into RTS because its more a city builder with army fighting).
Knights and Merchants is a real gem and im happy that its still available today on gog. I lost countless hours in that game as a teenager. Another one that was perhaps not that known but also quite good was Knights of Honor.
I really liked that one a lot. Even Armies of Exigo was not bad being more or less a Warcraft clone but still quite enjoyable.

I think Armies of Exigo is ok, but not very good. The idea of having underground battle wasnt that new aswell and besides that not that good implemented i think, Metal Fatigue did that alot better.
Thanks for remembering me on Knights of Honor. It was kinda like a mix of Stronghold and Cossacks. I never owned that one though, just rented it from a friend, played it a while and changed back to other games.

So since you cant find anythign good youll just throw money away on somethign you are seeing that others dont bother with? Just because thers a "need" ...why not go back to some old games you own...I started to do that, and have a blast, games I loved 5 , 10 years ago, some I still enjoy more than the "new" crap releases....like Rome2...oh what a failure that was....
i do that, for example i have right now Armies of Exigo and Rise of Nations physical laying next to me at the moment. But why? I already played through all of the RTS Games i liked, just returning to old software is simply not good and pleasing. Remakes of those games tend to be horrible anyway or simply adding nothing even new graphical fidelity. Age of Empires remastered was horribly buggy, Age of Mythology seems to have 0 new things and even the graphics tend to be nearly the same, overal result its not worth what they are asking for just for a remastered version).

Who said i throw money at something ("just")? I never said that. I said i think its a no brainer because RTS Games are a rarity and the game looks good enough to be worth the price tag.
You can "start" to go back to older games if you want. Im already old enough that i had this phase countless times already. I mostly do this once a year, only problem is that many old games simply dont run anymore (Armies of Exigo was so awful to get running), (btw gog.com is my hope to then get back old games) or i just lost my cd key or something like that.
Sorry but thats no argument. I want to get something fresh and at the same time with the old spirit of slower pacing in these games.
And btw, the Total War franchise is no RTS franchise, sadly. Even more Creative Assembly seem to be struggling with technical polishing.
I think Etherium CAN be a good RTS, it looks like it could because it shows many features of our actual generation that fit into the genre. Grey Goo seems to be a good little RTS aswell and i will grab that for sure. With Etherium i will wait till release and look up some reviews (not Steam User ones) and then decide whether its worth to get instantly or later on.
Act of Aggression seems to be an exact follow up to C&C, slower paced, intense, cool and i heard many interesting and great things. Besides that, the developer team and the publisher have a quite good lineup. There are not some "no names" or companies with a shady past involved. So im looking forward to these 3 RTS Games now.
They are just a chance, im not sure if they might be really good. But i see 3 good chances to have a good RTS this year and i hope all three will be great and the Genre will receive a revival this year.
Its about time. Other genres also had their revival in 2014 and are still getting it (Space Sims, P&C, City Builder).

I rather spend my money on these games than on any Ubisoft game or EA game this year. So *shrug* yeah, wheres the problem?

well to me act of agresion is a no go, i tloko sboring, goo..looks simplistic, and etherium reminds me of sup com but it is super wattered down, to the point of meh...not wanting it much...I wont buy an RTS just because its an rts, it has to offer to me some value...and frankly I see no game out there that does that to any degree, thats why I will wait after release and judge it then.

well thats fair, but subjective. I didnt say that those are bought just for the sake of RTS, its just a high factor for me to consider buying those and being a bonus to convince me much more. I would even pass by some flaws and overlook them. Thats why i said there is a chance of an RTS coming holding the flag of the genre up and maybe save it from just dying.
I dont see where Act of Aggression is a no go, theres barely any information about it, apart that it shares similarities with Wargame in terms of line of sight for example. But if thats not your style of strategy then thats also a subjective taste. Some prefer medieval or fantasy rts games. I wouldnt call grey goo simplistic. I watched enough footage and it kind of is like a mix of C&C and Starcraft. It is still fast paced but far from being like a Starcraft pace because micromanagement was reduced. Point is, there are no builder units, which takes away alot of micro. But that doesnt mean its simplistic. C&C never had builder units, had ressource gatherer but you didnt do anything with those aswell. So it is kinda the same principle. Just added with some details to buildings and hiding units=strategy.
Etherium, hm dont know. I nfact it reminds me more of a SciFi real time version of Endless Legend at the moment. So i cant really judge it. Out of these 3 its the most curious for me. But it seems to be alright.

Well act of agression to me is a no go due to the "contemporary" theme, I was never interested in those, nor ww2 games, thats why coh got boring to me after a while (aand due to the go out and chase for bases factor), I called grey goo simplistic mainly due to the quite boring upgrade system, ...you can make a unit invisible, or marginally change thir stats, and thats about it, +, _ 1 of 2 changes....after playing sup com that years ago there was not a single RTS ofa scalle that would come close to it...in the number of unit variety, tactics, scale of maps, defences....heck I would even like grey goo a lot more if they had some shield system....somehtign to add a little bit more to the basic units/ defensive walls/ turets system, that prety much no other games expanded upon....yes I like turtling, then rushing in after a succesful defence ;)

Overall I think RTS genre is declining due to the fact that people are gettign more and more stupid....thers no other wya of putting this, there are unfortunetly a lot more brainless FPS fans out there than proper rts fans....heck even sup com 2 got dumbed down to fit the consoles...as such it was not what sup com 1, and fa fans liked...I mean i like dht eimproved visuals, and all, but the experimental unit spam, and shield mechanics..heh..it felt wattered down...but I would still play it vs lets say starcraft 2 ..which to me was a game I got bored with after a week or 2....it just felt simpistic, and narrowminded....both visually (no camera zoom out) and it felt like a FPS player's rts, aka skill, tactics and thinking was not key to wining a match, but buid order memorization, and clicks per minute...all nonsence....I like games that reward experimentation, or unconventional aproaches...and sup com /fa were the last real RTS games to me.

i agree to your points, not entirely and maybe not in detail but overall yes. I just dont think its because people are dumb. I think there are several factors that caused problems to the genre. Lets say for example that many big franchises in the RTS genre were overtaken by big publishers. We can see where C&C is now, at the free to play and browser game market. We can see where Dungeon Keeper is, at the F2P market. So its a big factor of which company owns the rights on already big franchises or destroyed those. I would say, that big publishers destroyed many substantial franchises in the genre. C&C was one of the major ones in the RTS Genre. Then there are changes in the distribution of games and companies tend to go the way of the most successful. the most successful genre then was the FPS and companies created more of these. Digital distribution eased that up but that came at a time when RTS Games where already mostly gone with the result, that many players dont know the genre that well anymore. It became a niche genre of these people who know the genre or explored it later on. But i think the downgoing of the whole genre before the digital distribution and better networking of players lead to the point, where RTS Games just went under. They have less chance to be shown, they are simply not so present and so people dont get to them.
We can see what happens when this changes. With Kickstarter and Steam being popular, Indiegames raising as very popular aswell, a game like Planetary Annihilation had a huge userbase. Many people bought that game, it was finally one RTS that got this spotlight.

So, i think these are 2 major factors, the genre became to small to be seen very much. It missed the time to get spotlight and so went under and was just ignored while franchises in other genres got the attention. This was caused because the number of quality RTS games just got less and less during the years. So many studios that were big and producing games like build up strategy, RTS or Citybuilder just went down. I remember Topware, Shiny, Sierra, Westwood to just name a few that are non existant anymore. Other were just overtaken by publishers and then destroyed, others changed their focus to swim with the wave of the big publishers, like Bullfrog. Lionhead Studios is one of the last ones.

About the games coming now:
I agree kind of, but i dont see the points you take as negatives. But thats subjective. It also is a point of preference. Some "RTS" players like it to be fast paced, but it seems the majority isnt so much into that kind. You could now say that SC2 has a huge userbase, but theres also not much of an alternative.
Im btw also one of the turtleing players in RTS. BUT i dont feel the need to just use one strategy to win. In the end im a strategy player. Grey Goo seems to be simplistic, you are right, there are no special abilities or many upgrades. Every faction has upgrades to change the units, but ofcourse the "depth" isnt so much there as in lets say Starcraft in terms of what every unit could do. But at the same time i see that as a strength. The micromanagement is reduced very much to focus more on what is important. The combat strategy. And i have seen enough real gameplay footage to be sure they can deliver possibilities.
But i also see that many who have played it think its a very good game, but not incredible.
I think it can fulfill what it wants to be. Deliver a good bunch of hours (30+) of fun in a good RTS. Its from the Devs of C&C (partially) so i have hope. And if it is successful, it may get a following game and they go on enhancing it. I see it as a basic rts game i can enjoy and have a chance to get fun out of. It must not be the best RTS possible.
I dont lose anything as i see it. I have the chance to get a good RTS experience (if the price is ok). I can still return to good old games if i am getting bored, but it may also turn out incredible.

For Act of Aggression, the only thing i dislike from the theme is the classical "US is good guys, others are bad guys" theme. Thats what i hate aswell. But besides that i love having some good tankfights, mixed with infantry and helicopters of modern warfare. Mixed with some futuristic elements (like jetpack troops or stealth/cloaked units or something like that).
I pretty much loved C&C Generals, this is getting close enough to it. I just dislike the classical role. I would have liked the theme more with having Alliance vs others. But thats not a major issue.

Anyone else has suggestions of RTS Games being interesting? RUSE was also good but also a bit one dimensional in terms of basebuilding. Which is shown with Wargame, they just too kthe basebuilding completely away and it still is kinda the same.
But maybe i missed something good on the RTS genre, i dont think so but totally possible.

Act of War: Direct Action might be an RTS game for you. It's very similar to Command and Conquer Generals, set in our modern world with some future technology mixed in. It's was released in 2005 though and Steam unfortunately pulled it from their shop

It wasn't pulled by Steam. Publishing rights were owned by Atari (game developed by Eugen Systems) that wen't bankrupt before 2013 and only one of their games is published on Steam after that since the new Atari decided to leave pc gaming and move to casinos, mobile games and such stuff. You can still buy the game in Ataris online store.

i own that already. Bought it on release and liked the story, i never finished it though because i was playing other games like WC3 at that time (if i remember correctly).
I have to dig out that sometime.

Random input into the discussion I like slow long games as a preference. I don't enjoy super twitchy got to be on it every second or I'll lose kinda RTS. Even in games like Starcraft I like to slow it down and enjoy the game. Have time to think about the next more.

Agreed, those twitch "rts"'s arent really real RTS's just click speed testers lol....TO me real RTS's are about tactics, strategy, both long term and short term + positioning, and manouverability / research and resource management.
Buntkreuz 2015 年 1 月 9 日 下午 6:02
absolutely agreed. Problem is and was, Starcraft is one out of many possible types of RTS's. You can have fast ones, slow ones, some are settled in the middle, some have different mechanics and so on. There used to be many different types of RTS Games, but now we only have the hyper micromanagement ones and so it became a focus.
I hope this will change with future releases. I set high hopes into Grey Goo and Etherium aswell in Act of Aggression. Those may not be the perfect games then (we dont know yet) and they may not be for everyone (as Devastator made clear), but we should see it this way:
Those games are delivering less micromanagement and slower paced Strategy. The more games like these are released, the more the focus is changed on RTS Games generally. The chance raises that if they are getting a majority and more popular again, new ones are made and we can say good bye to Stacraft-like RTS Games and have a more diverse market in the genre again with many different choices.
I dont think Starcraft is bad per se. I just would like to have alternatives, but there is none really.
Thats why the type of RTS that Starcraft represents became so influential, it had kind of a monopoly of new RTS Games during the last years because no new RTS Games were coming out showing it differently. And those coming out are like SC2 because they wanted a piece of the cake.
Thats how i see it.
Not Your Heroes 2015 年 1 月 9 日 下午 8:32
just my 2cents has anyone played starcraft 2 at the speed its actually supposed to run at?

what annoys me about Starcraft 2 is the default game speed for the game is set to fastest, which basically shortens all the productions times, movement times and everything by about 3/4 that's the actual game-play we see on twitch, play Sc2 and turn game-speed to normal before you play a skirmish the game changes entirely to an alright RTS.

it kinda make sme wonder did blizzard have any faith in their RTs normal game-speed or are they that scared nobody would watch SC2 at a normal/ slower pace.

on the subject of the act of series by eugen, act of aggression is a sequel/spiritual successor to act of war Direct action/high treason.

seriously the bad guy is the consortium from the first game with task force talon's replacement basically fighting them.
