Other 2D fighting games you recommend?
Hello everyone! Until some months ago I was completely oblivious to fighting games, I just felt like I was completely inept and unable to have a grasp of the various mechanics. Since a friend of mine introduced me to SFIV I changed my mind a bit; I've played said game a bit (12 hours if I recall correctly), but then it was Skullgirls who made me lose my head. I absolutely love the game and its pacing and being combo based (way more than SFIV), even though I still haven't played it so long (25 hours more or less). I'm not a pro by any means, I think I am kind of an intermediate player: I can do some combos and advanced mechanics and I manage to win some match online if not against complete pros. I am absolutely not good with super long combos which involve reset and similar mechanics, which are however essential to the most advanced online play. The bottom line is, I'd like to get another 2D fighter to expand my horizons, but what would the right choice for me? I'd like a game this paced, or even faster, but not relying too much on impossible inputs, infinite combos and things that make you win a match leaving the opponent completely powerless. I was thinking of BlazBlue or Guilty Gear (possibly CP and Xrd if they make it to Steam), but aren't they too difficult?

tl;dr I'd like you to recommend me a 2D fighter with similar pace and difficulty!

Melty Blood is fun. It's not on steam though. And it's pretty hard to acquire a legit copy. It also has great third party support in terms of overhauled netplay. The thirdparty netcode developed for it is rollback and you can set your delay to 0 if you wish. It's really good.

On steam? My go to's would be guilty gear and blazblue. Xrd is pretty okay, and continuum shift extend is pretty great, with extra features from the basic game.

Mmmh I'll try to acquire more infos on that, in this case.

Would it be wise to wait for Chrono Phantasma? And mechanics wise, if I am comfortable with this game's at mid levels, could I fare decently in BB and GG?

I wouldn't bank on chrono phantasma being on here any time soon, as nice as that would be.

And if you are comfortable with skullgirls, you will have a decent foundation on which to build for blazblue. Would make it much easier then just going in blind. However, do note that blazblue is a much more neutral game in terms of game play. You can't combo nearly as long, so offensive pressure and defensive ability is much more important. Guilty gear is pretty much the same as blazblue with even more unique characters.

Well thank you. As I wrote, I like the pacing of Skullgirls but I'm not that much into super long combos so I wouldn't mind a game still combo based but with more neutral play.

Most capcom arcade games (except street fighter series) are really flexible in movement, and somewhat fast phased. You can play them for free with netplay included.

You can also try some SNK games like kof series, they're fast and they have short combos...
...But combos in SNK games are not mandatory to win, you might need a good neogeo emulator for that, and some of them has netplay as well.

I have tried a guilty gear game, and personally i didn't liked it, it felt too slow and the jumps were limited just like SF series. Those jumps usually follows this formula:

jump = uppercut (unavoidable damge and knocked back to the corner)

In like marvel, capcom or even skullgirls you can control your jumps by using a attacks or air dash to cancel or manipulate your movement afther you jumped...

on Steam? BB CSE (Chronophantasma isn't coming until at very least June as CPE and that's just a maybe since there isn't any confirmation yet but Arcsys just started publishing for Steam themselves so I'd say there's a high possibility) and maybe GG+R which is coming out tomorrow should be the way to go, (I'd wait for reviews for GG just in case the netcode sucks, also some people think GG is too complicated for them so I suggest you get BB tbh)
but if you want to expand your horizons download fightcade play MvC and Vampire Savior they have a similar pacing to SG and have way shorter combos.

Thank you all for your opinions! Steam games would indeed be my priority but if those good games are legally playable with some kind of emulator then by all means I will check them out!

Smash bros, any of the 5 games (64, melee, brawl, pm, 4), Street Fighter 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear Xrd, Blazblue chronophantasma, Marvel vs capcom 3, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Injustice, King of Fighters.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend is the closest game to Skullgirls on Steam: great tutorials, combo based, fast-paced and a lot of fun! There's a ton of game modes too and a rich story mode (including the story from Calamity Trigger). IMO worth the full price, but Steam Sales are coming, so if you wait a bit you can get it for less 50% or more.

PS: Calamity Trigger doesn't have a half of what CSE has (no tutorial either). It's a lot cheaper, but if you really like fighting games, CSE is a better option and more user friendly.

...And when you get good on BlazBlue, you can try Guilty Gear - it's harder to play and more difficult, but very rewarding! FYI: No tutorials on this one - on Steam - (even on the recently released Accent Core Plus R).

I think I'll get Continuum Shift as soon as it is on sale and then I'll wait for GG Xrd playing with it and Skullgirls!

Great! I think you'll love BlazBlue CSE. It's totally awesome! :)

The only thing that held me back is that CP exists, but I think I'm not gonna die if I spend 15 bucks on Continuum Shift first... and I don't think CP will arrive that soon on PC, so I'll go with Continuum Shift haha

And another thing: as I read that Blazblue has a good story, you said that CS includes Calamity Trigger's story. So I won't miss anything by purchasing CSE?

I can't speak for extend, but the original continuum shift didn't include it entirely. But it was talked about a lot. However, that doesn't mean you will quite understand what happened exactly, you will get the end cases, which could be enough anyways.
